I have come across information circulating on social media suggesting that the woman seen in the poppy fields may not be Mercy Khongsai, as identified by certain social media pages. I hereby withdraw that specific portion of my earlier post which may have implied or suggested that the unidentified woman was Mercy Khongsai. I do not wish to perpetuate a potentially incorrect identification. However, this clarification does not alter or retract the substantive concerns raised in my post regarding the devastating scale of illicit poppy cultivation in the hill areas of Manipur, particularly in territories reportedly under the influence or control of Kuki narco-terrorist groups. Our concern is not about one individual. It is about the larger ecosystem of illicit drug cultivation, trafficking and its devastating consequences for Manipur’s society, environment, forests and ecological balance. Those rushing to defend the misidentification of Mercy Khongsai should also demonstrate equal concern and willingness to acknowledge and confront the illicit activities taking place within their own communities, including those involving people close to them. The issue is much bigger than one individual or one disputed identity. Defending someone against misidentification is legitimate, but it should not become a convenient distraction from confronting illicit drug cultivation, trafficking and the networks that sustain narco-terrorism in Manipur.
