a few half-serious thoughts about the Cheesecake Factory and our self-appointed champions of the American working-class nymag.com/intelligencer/arti…

So when you said “growing up going to cheesecake factories it was a luxury” you meant “when i was a freshman in college at the most expensive university in the country it was a luxury.” Got it thanks for clearing that up!
Please don’t unfollow me over this but this take is fully correct. Silver is and has always been very good at modeling elections/reading the election tea leaves, even when his model has been “wrong.” (He’s a terrible pundit, of course.)
Listened to Nate Silver on Ezra this morning. One of the least popular things I could do on this website is defend Nate Silver, so challenge accepted.
His "vibes" have been directionally correct in every Election. In 2012, he fought against the polling unskewers making claims that Romney would win based on undersampling of Republicans.
In 2016, his model was famously FAR more bullish on Trump than any others. He was the only modeler who understood the possibility of correlated polling error.
In 2020, he repeatedly emphasized the higher than usual uncertainty due to the pandemic.
In 2022, he fought back against pollsters (NY Times!) basically ignoring their own data to buy into the Red Wave.
In 2024, he said that even though his model was 50/50, his gut said Trump would win.
All in all, a better record than anyone else on Election Twitter.
Real Americans believe the Rainforest Cafe is actually the Amazon, don’t you elitists know this???

the piece isn't talking to people who want to buy a 5-bedroom house, it's talking to people trying to rent a 2-bedroom apartment to make space for a baby
nyc has always been pricy but you could live a certain kind of life here that now feels increasingly unreachable
Why don't they just leave NYC? I'm not trying to be callous, but there's a whole wonderful world out there that's more affordable.

I think the misconception that nyc is a transient adult playground is what makes people ask questions like these. you have to remember that some people are actually from here, cost of living is the issue not people being close minded about uprooting their lives…

There are many wonderful places to live in the world, but New York should not just be abandoned and ceded to the very, very rich.

Also, you can live this way when you’re young and it’s great. The issue is that it’s becoming impossible to live here (or even in the nearby suburbs) when you’re an adult with a family, which wasn’t the case when my parents were raising me in the city. xitter.cf/LvngstonThunder/status…

Probably because their story is a lie. I know plenty of kids from suburban NJ living in NYC on five figure incomes. It's called "roommates" and "sacrifice".
I think these people have never actually been to a Cheesecake Factory. The joke was about the decor, which is intentionally cheesy, not about the quality. They’d know this if they’d ever set foot in one.
does she own stock in the Cheesecake Factory or something
This week’s newsletter: I wrote about the GOPs strategy of Islamophobia has been aided by Democrats and the press. And I find the lack of pushback not only immoral but shortsighted.
We either all have a place in democracy or we don’t. And the forces seeking to marginalize their place in the American project will likely expand to others
