Bumping this old tweet. My favorite analogy for the number of chains is TV channels.
I expect there to be dozens of relevant chains, not millions.
Also fun fact, when I wrote this post three years ago, I still used the mdash regularly, but sadly have since given it up π€£
How many rollups will there be?
I donβt know, but a helpful analogy that Iβve found is TV channels πΊ
Clearly having all TV shows on a single channel wonβt work. Thereβs just too much programming.
But equally clearly it wouldnβt make sense for every TV show to have its own channel. Weβd end up with channels that had no programming for most of the day. And each one would have to find its own advertisers, distributors etc. And discovery of new programs would be a nightmare.
The system we have today is a natural one β channels are loosely organized by genres. If you like cartoons, you can watch the Cartoon Network. If you like nature, you can watch the National Geographic channel. And itβs not always an exact science β cartoons about nature could go either way.
I envision a similar world emerging for blockchains. Each app wonβt have its own network, but likeminded apps that appeal to common users will form their own networks. Weβre already seeing this with DeFi and gaming but I imagine that many more verticals will emerge over time. And it makes sense. The network can be tailored to those apps and users will be able to easily engage with and discover similar apps with no friction.
So will we ultimately have a dozen networks? I think so. Will we have millions? I think not. How many exactly will we have? Only time will tell.

hot take:
the best DEXs will obfuscate cross-chain swaps
for some reason this has taken much longer than its needed to
but the reality is that if DEXs want to go from a niche crypto focused product to a venue where you can buy any asset, anywhere, there is no option
compete or get outcompeted
founder energy on @arbitrum is tangible rn
sad I couldnβt make it to singapore for the founder house, but hope to see pics/videos of the recap!

When an early-stage company pays dividends, it's usually telling you it has run out of places to grow.

Congrats @fhenix on launching on @arbitrum.
FHE began as academic research aimed at enabling confidentiality computation on the blockchain.
Our mandate with Tandem (our partner studio and VC arm) is to support and collaborate with teams solving blockchainβs biggest challenges and confidentiality is one of them.
Weβre proud to team up with Fhenix to bring FHE to market and we look forward to continuing our work together to bring confidentiality across the programmable economy.

The rate at which tradfi is moving on chain is rapidly accelerating. Itβs the most incredible time to be building in crypto.
There are two things happening in parallel which seem inherently contradictory but are actually extremely bullish.
1) There is major consolidation occurring among startups.
2) Traditional firms are making heavy investment into the industry at a product level.
Why is this good?
For the longest time crypto protocols were cursed with the inability to shut down. That has changed. Most startups fail and talent wasnβt getting recycled into the highest value opportunities. They were getting burned out enslaved to a token/protocol that was doing nothing to improve the world.
We are now firmly past that. Crypto protocols that have PMF are going to see explosive growth over the next decade and the tradfi opportunities necessary to get us there are picking up talent needed to get it done.
The next five years are going to be extremely powerful if you contribute to or invest in the right opportunities. Itβs why I love working at @Offchain.
