According to the football ads, this technology which is an EXISTENTIAL THREAT TO HUMANITY is also good for: 1) identifying subscriptions I can cancel 2) trying out costumes on my dogs 3) locating the best price on stuff I plan to buy

All the richest industry leaders agree: There should be a conspiracy in restraint of trade, and the government should regulate their industry in the way they desire and are best prepared to comply with.

Exactly right
If you asked people their fears, many would list their top two as (1) dying, (2) being useless. (1) corresponds to AI going badly. (2) corresponds to AI going "well"

Every year on or right before 9/11, we show this video to our students. It’s not only powerful story-telling, it’s a reminder to a younger generation about how life altering 9/11 was for those of us who lived it. It’s only 10 min #themanintheredbandana

You’ve gotta use AI because it’s the future. But also it’ll take your job. But also it’ll create a paradise on earth and solve most of our problems. But also it’ll end humanity soon. But also you’ll get left behind if you don’t use it right now.

We asked people how close they were to the person they ought to be, morally speaking. The group that the most likely to say they were "pretty close" or "already there"? Non-religious people who were at least 55 years old.

This is the most important survey that no one talks about. Ed tech ate the school day. And schools sleepwalked into Ed Tech Tools As Curriculum. (Reminder: whatever you have in front of your kids for their six to seven hours in school is your curriculum. Intentional or accidental.) I think this all snuck up on many people. But it isn't terribly new (2021 survey), and it has received very little direct acknowledgement. It seems much more accidental than intentional, TBH. Like, "oops, we bought a bunch of tech tools and they ate the school day." From a 2021 EdWeek survey:

The AI industry gins up apocalypse fears to court regulatory capture, to juice investment (give us cash our tech is SO POWERFUL it might kill EVERYONE) and government support (we can’t let China have THIS). But, sure, some employees have drank the kool aid and are true believers.
People just genuinely cannot fathom that those who work in AI are trying to be honest and candid about what the risks seem to be. I think it’s true that we undersell the benefits and are ~bad at marketing, but the notion that risk discourse is a branding tactic is simply wrong.

"Travel leagues have made youth sports more expensive, hypercompetitive, and all-consuming."
‘Travel sports,’ a term that has come to encompass all sorts of private teams, leagues, and clubs, used to be for the truly exceptional young athlete. Now, they’re for anyone willing to pay — an expensive, exhausting commitment that has become popular not necessarily because millions of parents want them for their children but because it can feel like there’s no other choice. Rec programs are underfunded and struggle to compete with for-profit leagues for prime field, rink, and court times. And the level of play is diluted, often very early, as travel teams are incentivized to enroll children at young ages. Around 5 million children in the U.S. now compete on travel teams. Parents find themselves trapped. They know the benefits of sports and want that for their children, yet giving it to them often means buying into a sports ecosystem that’s inherently flawed. As the pay-to-play model increasingly takes hold, so does the idea that kids should start competing at younger and younger ages, risking their sense of self along with their shoulders and ACLs. “I never want my kids to look back and say I didn’t do everything I could to help them live their dreams,” a mother of three soccer players said. She’s hired professional photographers to take action shots for her 12- and 13-year-olds’ Instagram accounts — the platform has become a recruiting tool — and they’ve both asked her to pay for personal trainers. “I think the word isn’t ‘specialize’; you are ‘professionalizing’ your kid early. You are exposing them to everything professionals have to deal with — I’m talking injury, time, schedule, everything,” said John Van Benschoten, a former MLB player and travel-baseball coach. It makes one ask: All this for what? And for whom? Read Caitlin Moscatello’s cover story on how travel leagues have made youth sports more expensive, hypercompetitive, and all-consuming — and the investors who are making a killing: nymag.visitlink.me/1-gbZQ

One reason I am reflexively skeptical of the AI industry’s claims is that the very people we are supposed to hail as geniuses also completely failed to anticipate that branding their antichrist box the Best-Case-Mass-Layoffs-Worst-Cast-Extinction Machine was a non-savvy PR move.
The anti-datacenter movement is literally the most rational response imaginable to an industry whose leaders have publicly said the best case scenario for their product is to get everyone fired. If you can’t see this then your brain is in late stage tech rot.

Sources: Oklahoma and coach Brent Venables have agreed to a new 6-year contract that averages $10.5 million per year. It adds two years to the current deal and goes through 2031. Venables led Oklahoma to the College Football Playoff in 2025, OU’s first CFP since 2019.
