Tolkien lost his father at at 4 or so years old and was completely orphaned by 12, when he lost his mother. He was born into the second part of the Industrial Revolution, and during his lifetime watched much of the world change in ways he hated, destroying and permanently altering the beautiful things he loved. He lived through 2 world wars, fighting at the Somme and losing many of his friends, and having his sons fight in the second. This was not a good time for man in many regards. The world was changing rapidly, many men who fought in WW1 became very lost and cynical about the world, they were left damaged by trauma that no one knew how to deal with and often didn’t care enough to help them with. Young men were shamed by women giving out white feathers if they were not seen in uniform during The Great War, marking them as cowards or shirking their duty. There was not much to be optimistic about during this time period for young men. The ones who didn’t die in the First World War would have to watch their sons die or risk death in the Second. Tolkien wrote an optimistic book not because he lived through an optimistic time, but because he had faith in something beyond the dire circumstances of the time. He saw great evils, not just from the enemies, but from men on all sides during this time. And the Lord of the Rings, as hopeful as it may feel, is set in a bleak time in a waning world, where once great civilisations have been reduced to crumbling cities and ruins covered in foliage. But instead of going the route of many of the authors of the time, he did not fill his world with cynicism, but filled it with something to aspire to, something to encourage you towards doing what is right in the bleakest of times. People who say “yeah but Aragorn had this and I don’t” are missing the point. You aren’t supposed to compare yourself to these characters as stand-ins for your exact situation in life, you are supposed to be inspired by the ways they handle adversity they face and the ways they decide to do what is right. Your life isn’t going to be as epic and your circumstances aren’t going to seem as high and noble, but that’s not the point of fiction. Fiction takes concepts and turns them into something tango. LotR encourages us to do what we can to press forward with the circumstances given to us, that is the point. Not that you are in line to be king and have a beautiful love interest. Not that you get a big inheritance from your uncle, but that whether you are an insignificant gardener or the heir to the throne, you are still responsible for playing your part to the best of your ability and that it is worth it even if it seems futile in the moment.

If you want young men to be Aragorn, old people have to start being Elrond and women have to start being Arwen.
Don’t empathize with Anakin. Identify with Aragorn. He’s the ultimate anti-doomer. When all seemed lost, Aragorn still acted out of principle & not self-interest. He didn’t change his actions based on feelings or probabilities. He didn’t harbor vengeance. He had a duty, and he risked life and love to fulfill it (saving both in the process).

🇵🇱 Today is All Saints' Day in Poland, and it's one of the most beautiful things you will ever see. Millions of Poles travel across the whole country to the graves of their families. They light candles called "znicze". By night every cemetery in Poland glows with thousands of little red flames. A beautiful tradition, handed down for centuries.

So, basically, 500 million Europeans expect 300 million Americans to protect them from 120 million Russians who can’t even defeat 40 million Ukrainians while those 500 million Europeans don’t even realize they are being conquered by 2 billion Muslims who claim they are being persecuted by 8 million Israelis. Is that about right? 1

“We can’t afford a home” “Durr John Husted’s ass am I right guys?” JD Vance is the worst politician ever
Q: How does the right expect us to start families young when the average price of a home in America costs more than $415,000, which feels out of reach for us? JD Vance: I want to point out that I think I've been asked 4 or maybe 5 questions and I've only been asked 1 question about John Husted's ass by Jesse Watters.

All too often we associate culture with high art, lofty ideas, and marble columns. It is better understood closer to the dirt where it originated. To a sense of place. So reveals the word itself. Culture derives from the Latin cultura, a Roman working word for the tilling of a field. Look deeper and find the root verb colere used for things we do not necessarily associate together today: to till the ground, to dwell in a place, to honor and revere. In short, all the things that allow our songs, our food, our ways and mores, everything that we understand as culture today to thrive. This is important, for as we become a more globally connected people, ever homogenized by technology, our understanding of culture becomes unrooted from the particular locations where it was formed. This is a tragedy. @OldHollowTree in ACC's "Bully Pulpit"

19 years ago, an ambitious dream to bring an iconic book series into the world of video games came to life with the release of The Witcher. It was the start of an unforgettable path, which wouldn't have been possible without our friends at @bioware. From lending us their Aurora Engine and sharing their knowledge, to giving us a spot at their booth at E3, their support helped turn our vision into Geralt’s first interactive adventure. Thank you to everyone who has walked the Path with us from the very beginning. Happy 19th anniversary, witchers! ⚔️ 🐺

A lot of you replied to my last post, so here are a few thoughts. The majority of people on a team the size of Veilguard’s had little or no say in the things you disliked about it. Right up to the end, BioWare still had many people who worked on the games you loved. I also have my own issues with modern entertainment, especially when political messaging gets in the way of good storytelling. I was the guy responsible for the broodmothers in Origins, but also the guy who wanted Zevran to be a same-sex romance. Years later, my son told me he was gay (he gave me permission to share this). I converted to Catholicism several years ago. My son and I love each other and enjoy arguing over politics and religion. My favorite character is Conan the Barbarian, and I love the art of Frank Frazetta, Brom and Chris Achilleos. What I’m trying to say is that it’s possible to hold views that don’t fit neatly into anyone’s political camp, and to love and respect people you disagree with. People are complicated. That includes the people who make the games you love or hate.

CD Projekt Red has hired so many Cyberpunk 2077 modders that Cyberpunk 2’s associate game director says around half of the quest team are former modders. Pawel Sasko says modding can be a “foot-in-the-door technique” and a “gateway into game dev,” giving talented fans real experience with how games are built. “We actually hired so many modders. I would say, at this point, half of the quest team is all former modders.” Some of the developers working at CD Projekt Red started out making mods as far back as The Witcher 2.
