SIR PATRICK STEWART (1940-2026) Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end. You could hear it in his accented voice and in the stern honesty with which he told you what he thought and felt. Yorkshiremen have no truck with half-truths or avoidance of big issues. He wore his heart on his sleeve, which made him a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love. We first met as ambitious young actors with the Royal Shakespeare Company half a century ago but we weren’t in the same productions. My first strong memory was a few years later, meeting him in the street in central London when he told me about an offer to take over a leading part in 'Star Trek'. “But Patrick think of your stage career in the UK. Do you really want to risk—getting lost in Hollywood for years and years?”. Well, he took the risk and thank goodness for us all that he did for not just his devoted Trekkies but film and theatre audiences, who marvelled at his using international celebrity to star in a string of cinema successes ('X-Men' of course) and in great classical plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Peter Shaffer, Pinter and Beckett at Stratford-upon-Avon, in London’s West End and on Broadway. America was his adopted home, where he met his adored Sunny who has cared for him through sickness and health, through thick and thin. But he never forsook his origins: and the proudest achievement of the most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic, was his appointment as Chancellor of Huddersfield University in Yorkshire. His farewell performance in 'Avengers: Doomsday' is yet to be seen. Ian McKellen 29 October 2026 Photo: University of Huddersfield

With the passing of @SirPatStew, I’m reminded of the great memories of watching STTNG in my teens, how it renewed everything the original series had meant to me, and then became so much more as its own entity. Thank you, Sir Patrick - for Star Trek and your various works beyond.

I’m not sure those weapons could hallucinate and randomly (or intentionally) self-determine to launch/detonate though… #WarGames aside.
I worked on an actual thermonuclear weapons project, and the dissonance was less bizarre.

If I switch from an app for a few mins to e.g. answer a text/email/call, when I return to the app, I want to resume where I left off for that post or article of interest. Not reloading the stream view and that post long gone. Reasons I barely use apps like FB and LI.

Pro: Employees building essential agentic software that product teams won’t prioritize. Con: single commit repo that hasn’t been touched in 9 months. No license file, no Dockerfile. Just checking a box. Because it’s so easy with AI, there’s no real ownership or sweat equity.

“A $1 model isn’t cheap if an agent burns through five times the tokens, retries failed tasks, and hands off work to a half-dozen other agents.” “The unit that matters is no longer price per token. It’s the price per finished task.” #SpotOn

If your workers can’t be trusted at home, they can’t be trusted. You screwed up hiring them and are covering up your mistakes. You are the fraud.
Why Remote Work is White Collar Fraud. "I have a three-year-old and a five-year-old. The idea that I could do any work at my house is like a total fantasy. The kids come home at 3pm, your work day needs to keep going. I'm highly against it." @typesfast

If the kids can “come home at 3p”, then they can “come home at 5 or 6p” from day care. If they come home at 3p and can’t be kept out of your hair, are you saying your spouse is incompetent?

a) this kids come home at 3p - all by themselves, completely unsupervised. A bogus straw man argument to justify his bias. b) no one ever gets interrupted or pulled into a useless meeting when working in the office. At least the 3 yr old interruption would be rejuvenating.

The problem with the "if it works who cares what the code looks like" mindset for agentic work is that it assumes the agent has a perfect understanding of "works." Realistically, things are underspecified, agents make bad assumptions, etc. To be fair, agents are pretty good at unit test coverage. They're pretty bad at designing human experiences (API, CLI flags, etc.), especially cohesive ones for future roadmap plans they may not have visibility into (unless your backlog is perfect and vision fully laid out, which I doubt). They're bad at knowing where performance matters and what type (CPU vs memory tradeoffs). They're bad at where compatibility matters and where it doesn't (and tend to err on the side of preserving it without further guidance). Etc. Unless you have this ALL specified, you can't possibly claim "it works" without taking a look and thinking about it.

I wanted to go soooo bad as a kid. Just wasn’t in the cards. That being said, space and space flight still make me feel like a kid. I’m really looking forward to seeing a moon outpost in my lifetime! #LetsGo
U.S. Space & Rocket Center @RocketCenterUSA in Huntsville, Alabama, home to @SpaceCampUSA. I am quite sure if I had not attended when I was 12, I would not be where I am today. And now this generation of campers will grow up in a world where outposts are operating on the Moon and someday Mars. Hard to imagine what could be more exciting or inspiring.

I can look up online every election I participated in. The statement “does not necessarily indicate …” is suspicious as hell. They have the names, they have the records. It’s not an unknown. They either don’t want to know or they don’t want us to know.
🚨OH. MY. GOSH!!! The State of North Carolina just found over 34,000 DEAD PEOPLE still on the voter rolls. But don't worry... Election officials say this, "does not necessarily indicate that illegal votes were cast...." Suuuuuuper reassuring. Pass the SAVE Act!!!!!!!
