e-Cigarettes are likely much safer than cigarettes.
In 2010, a court case exempted e-cigarettes from drug regulation, leading to a massive uptick in patents, availability, and, potentially saving thousands of American lives🧵

Let's just go through some of this, because why not
- Real wages have continued to go backwards under Labor
- Public and social housing as a proportion of housing stock continues to decline, waiting lists continue to blow out
- We have an enormous deficit in the number of homes being built relative to demand growth
- Household formation rates have been crushed
- There has been a technical depression in the real household spending of some age demographics and falls for every demo under 55.
I could go on for quite some time.

Australia’s tobacco‑control landscape has a peculiar feature: the organisations with the most influence over nicotine policy are also the ones most resistant to the idea that safer‑nicotine products could reduce harm. Among them, the Australian Council on Smoking and Health (ACOSH) stands out not because it is uniquely hostile to vaping, but because it frames that hostility as neutral, evidence‑based public health. This tension between branding and behaviour shapes almost every aspect of Australia’s nicotine debate, and it deserves far more scrutiny than it receives. ACOSH has become the kind of institution whose authority is taken for granted, whose statements are treated as objective truth, and whose worldview quietly permeates government communications, media narratives, and public understanding. Yet the organisation’s stance on safer‑nicotine products is not neutral, not balanced, and not evidence‑driven in any meaningful sense. It is ideological.

Isn’t it absurd that Annika Wells says her govt wants to protect children with their social media ban, yet won’t ban gambling ads being served to those same children?

The small target is not a political strategy adopted for the duration of a campaign. It is what a man becomes when he has spent twenty-five years wanting the job more than he wants anything the job is for. By the time you get there, the want has consumed the purpose.

My latest Economics Explained column in @FinancialReview. The massive increase in cigarette excise has INCREASED smoking in Australia. A lot. Illegal smokes are now more than 80% of the market. And excise revenue has cratered. The only way to fix this is to cut the excise to zero for a while. This will force illicit tobacco out of the market and allow us to start again. afr.com/politics/federal/the…

Marles will be ‘happy’ if it turns out there are no subs, as it will then be explained that this was always Australia’s long term intention. All the better to upset the plans of any potential enemies who were counting on us having at least some.
All this whilst secretly we were investing in a world class ‘Aussie flying saucer’
Read with interest. You should, too, by someone who actually knows something about nuclear submarines. Hint. Verdict on the longevity of the hand-me-down Virginia class submarines in sight of obsolescence is not good @johnmenadue johnmenadue.com/post/2026/06…
