Naive despair.
In the Fellowship, Gandalf says, “Despair is only for those who see the end beyond all doubt.”
When you’re young, you can’t imagine a life beyond what you experience every day. It’s easy, then, to be tempted into thinking you know your end and the end of everything.
But you don’t.
Life can change in an instant. Every 5 years your life will often radically change in ways you’d never expect.
Only with age and experience comes the realization that it is naive to trust wholly in what you see today.
Do not give yourself over to any cultural mood or sentiment or projection or prophecy. Do the right thing. Obey God and keep his commandments. Be faithful. Take risks and opportunities where they arise. You’ll experience tragedy along the way but you’ll also be rewarded. None of it will be quantifiable or measurable in ways that will make sense, but it doesn’t matter.
The only thing you need to know is that wallowing in despair and self-pity is crippling and naive. Resist it at all costs.

I had a great time talking with my boy @AdrielTweets here about the sacraments and infant baptism as a corollary of covenant theology. Give it a listen!
In this episode of What Christians Believe, Derek Rishmawy is joined by Adriel Sanchez to explore how covenant theology shapes the Reformed understanding of the sacraments, especially baptism and infant baptism. ow.ly/xyp05100B2G
We’re releasing a Reformation Day present a couple days early. Tune in this Thursday @solamediaorg.
We had a great time with @WesleyLHuff. Wes is the real deal. And he was more than generous with his time, a pleasure to work with, and a fun hang around the office.
When the church neglects the Scriptures, it must be reformed.
@WesleyLHuff joins @MichaelHorton_ & @AdrielTweets
Episode coming October 29th.
I think I’ve forgotten how to talk about and share things online that are personally stirring and moving, but I found this conversation with Joel Beeke to be astounding and a joy to listen to.
On the latest Everyday Pastor episode, @LigonDuncan asked @JoelBeeke what we can learn from the Puritan Thomas Goodwin.
Don’t miss Dr. Beeke’s answer. One of the most special moments we’ve ever had on the show.
One again, this is not what people want with AI.
We want humans to be humans and robots to be robots.
Give the people what they want:
We believe voice is the most natural way to interact with intelligence, so we created Dessa, the most authentic full-duplex speech model ever built. Talking with it feels like talking with a person…full of emotion, nuance, pauses, and a natural cadence.

What a wonderful surprise to see @Passages_Pod’s original artwork appear on this cover. Beautiful.
Print is magical, and it never gets old to hold one of these in the papery flesh! @pauljpastor @MrsKatyCarl @ecarrington725 @DanielKWilliam4 @profjoegriffith @matthew_loftus @Digitalliturgy @MischaWillett @SJ_Murray and several others not on this ex-bird site!
Tolkien gave up writing this project because he said that a new evil, focused on a secret cult of men who are fanboys of Sauron, was too cynical and cast doubt on the victory and eucatastrophe of LOTR.
Picking up what Tolkien decidedly put down is quite a choice.
Peter Jackson says 'The Lord of the Rings: Shadow of the Past' is in the scriptwriting stage ⚔️
The film takes place 14 years after 'The Return of the King'

Ok I made a blunder here. I was thinking of 'A New Shadow,' Tolkien's potential sequel to LOTR.
I didn't realize this was Colbert's project that covers the Barrow-wights and Tom Bombadil.

Monstrous idiots and barbarians.
I appreciate that the topics on Interesting Times are still interesting. But I’m still eager for Douthat to get his own podcast again.
This is subjective but … Name three PERFECT movies. No argument. No explanation. Just three flicks you think are perfect. Here's mine:
(1) Raiders of the Lost Ark
(2) The Empire Strikes Back
(3) The Sting (1973)

I’ve been reading these by @MichaelHorton_ on my train journeys recently, and maybe it’s just that I don’t have my ear to the ground anymore, but they are far too prescient & well-thought out for me to have taken 2 years to hear of them! Spread the word!
