Rarely does such a tiny island cause such a fuss, but this has certainly been the case with Diego Garcia. Trump has made a mess of the Mauritius-UK deal to hand over the strategic Indian Ocean site that hosts a US-British military base, ultimately helping China and putting India in an awkward position. My latest @ForeignPolicy piece explains. foreignpolicy.com/2026/10/21…

Reminiscent of the McCully/Allen reforms in MFAT 15 years back.
New: The State Dept is pushing out its most veteran diplomats by freezing/downgrading jobs + asking them to retire. It's replacing them with more junior staff deemed loyal to the admin. Staff say this is weakening relationships abroad + creating worse policy outcomes. Details👇

BREAKING: Iranian officials now believe a joint U.S.-Israeli attack is imminent and instructing the country’s armed forces to directly activate the decentralized “Mosaic Defense” doctrine, with commanders reportedly receiving extensive lists of U.S. economic and political targets to strike if war erupts, per Fars News. A senior Iranian security official warned that U.S. political assets and infrastructure in countries participating in the conflict could be directly targeted. The doctrine disperses military command across 31 provincial commands, designed to allow Iran to continue fighting even if its central leadership is attacked.

BREAKING: Donald Trump now announces the United States is “not negotiating” with Iran, and a major development is expected “fairly soon,” telling reporters, “Most people seem to think it’s after the election, we’re gonna see what happens,” per NewsNation’s White House correspondent. The declaration comes directly after Haaretz cited White House sources saying Trump shifted his position and is now considering a major preemptive strike on Iran, driven by intelligence assessments from Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth after his secret meeting with Benjamin Netanyahu. The diplomatic track is officially dead. It lands as Washington orders the complete evacuation of its embassy staff from Saudi Arabia and the Gulf, pulling its diplomats out while positioning a third carrier strike group in the region. The window for a deal has closed, and the next phase is coming soon.

US officials cited here think that an intense, brief (as in, a few days) air campaign will push Iran into making concessions on its nuclear program. These predictions have been made before. They have proven incorrect. Iran is broadly signaling it is ready for an attack, that it expects one, and will retaliate aggressively. Trump has yet to make a decision. nytimes.com/2026/10/21/us/po…

Please remind us why China started restricting critical mineral exports. It wasn’t chips sanctions placed by the US on China, by any chance, was it? The rest of us are collateral damage to the actions of both the US and China.
The Financial Times makes clear: When China restricts access to critical minerals, the ripple effects reach far beyond its borders – threatening manufacturers, consumers, and industries worldwide. One year after the U.S. and Australia signed the Critical Minerals Framework, our two nations are working to build more secure, diversified supply chains and reduce this vulnerability. BREAKING: Donald Trump has now shifted his position in the past few hours and is now reportedly considering a major preemptive strike on Iran, after giving significant weight to intelligence and assessments presented by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth following his meeting with Benjamin Netanyahu, per Haaretz’s correspondent in the Israeli Knesset. Comes days after Hegseth made an unannounced visit to Israel earlier this week and held talks with Netanyahu. Meanwhile, the US just ordered the complete evacuation of its embassy staff and families from Saudi Arabia, with families in the UAE, Jordan, Qatar, and Bahrain also ordered to leave immediately.

Not so fast, says Andrew Napuat. Vanuatu's Internal Affairs Minister is clearly not delighted with that section of the joint statement, or the ABC's report on it. He insists no decision has yet been made, and says China should not be "singled out" abc.net.au/news/2026-10-22/v…
Fascinating, potentially significant. Aus-Vanuatu joint statement after Nakamal meeting says China's police arrangement in Vanuatu is "expected to reduce over time." Only second Pacific nation to say (albeit with caveat) it'll wind back PRC police presence abc.net.au/news/2026-10-19/v…

Washington and Jerusalem Have Learned the Wrong Lessons from Their Wars with Iran I regret to say that neither the United States nor Israel appears to have learned the most important lessons from their previous military campaigns against Iran. Five realities must be understood before launching another war: 1. Iran will not surrender. Even a far more intense and destructive military campaign, including strikes against critical energy infrastructure, is unlikely to force Tehran into capitulation. The Iranian leadership will not simply abandon its nuclear ambitions or ballistic missile program under military pressure. If anything, another war could further strengthen its determination to preserve these capabilities. 2. Washington and Jerusalem cannot dictate the duration of the war. Anyone who believes another military campaign can be limited to a few days is making a dangerous assumption. Iran's response is likely to be extensive and violent, potentially forcing the United States and Israel to launch additional strikes. Once this cycle begins, controlling the pace, scope, and duration of the conflict will become extraordinarily difficult. 3. There is no military silver bullet. Striking Iranian infrastructure, including energy facilities, will not magically resolve the Iranian challenge. On the contrary, such attacks could trigger massive Iranian retaliation against energy infrastructure across the Middle East, with devastating regional and global consequences. 4. Iran will have surprises of its own. American and Israeli planners should not assume that Tehran will respond only with missiles and drones. Iran could attempt to disrupt undersea communications cables, conduct unconventional operations, or even launch limited ground operations against vulnerable targets in Kuwait or Bahrain. These are potential scenarios, not certainties, but they cannot be dismissed. Moreover, another confrontation could rapidly become a regional war, with Hezbollah, Iraqi Shiite militias, and the Houthis likely to join the fighting in one form or another. The assumption that a war against Iran can remain geographically contained is deeply questionable. 5. The global economic consequences could be severe. Another major conflict would almost certainly put substantial upward pressure on global energy prices, particularly if Iranian energy facilities were targeted and Tehran retaliated against Gulf energy infrastructure. The consequences would extend far beyond the Middle East, affecting global markets, inflation, and economic stability. The bottom line is simple: Without a return to a diplomatic agreement, another military escalation in the Gulf increasingly appears difficult to avoid. But that does not mean another war would achieve its strategic objectives. Even a highly destructive campaign targeting Iran's most critical infrastructure may fail to produce meaningful strategic gains. Instead, the United States and Israel could find themselves trapped in another prolonged war of attrition, with no decisive outcome, mounting economic costs, and an increasingly unstable Middle East. The fundamental lesson of the previous campaigns should be clear: Military superiority does not automatically translate into strategic success. Before launching another war, Washington and Jerusalem must answer a basic question: What exactly can another military campaign achieve that the previous ones failed to accomplish, and what is the exit strategy if Iran refuses to back down? There is no kinetic solution to the Iranian challenge. Ignoring that reality risks repeating the same strategic mistakes, only at a much higher cost. #Iran #iran

Pakistan, Turkey, Qatar and Indonesia have signed a new defence cooperation pact called "Badr Pact", in Doha today. The "Badr" pact aims at combining at the joint military strengths of four major Islamic nations at one place, instead of relying on the "foreign powers". While Badr means moon in Arabic, it is also a reference to "Ghazwa-e-Badr" - a landmark military victory for the Prophet Muhammad during early days of Islam.
