Before Striking Iran: Defining Achievable and realistic Objectives
Before considering a military strike against Iran, it is essential to be realistic about what such a campaign can actually accomplish.
There is little doubt that Iran is not a peer competitor to the United States militarily. The U.S. retains overwhelming conventional superiority and operational dominance across domains. However, Iran should not be underestimated. As demonstrated in previous limited confrontations, particularly in missile warfare, Tehran possesses meaningful asymmetric capabilities — especially in its ballistic missile arsenal and regional proxy network.
The core question, therefore, is not whether the United States can inflict damage. It is: What strategic objective is realistically achievable?
1. Regime Change
Even senior U.S. officials have acknowledged that regime change would be extraordinarily difficult to achieve.
There is no unified, viable opposition inside Iran capable of stepping in and governing. Moreover, regime change would almost certainly require a prolonged campaign, potentially including ground forces — something the American public and policymakers have shown little appetite for after Iraq and Afghanistan.
Absent a willingness to commit to a large-scale, long-term stabilization effort, regime change is not a credible objective.
2. Destabilizing the Regime to Trigger Internal Uprising
A military campaign could weaken the regime and create internal pressure. However, Iran’s leadership — particularly the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) — has no exit option. The regime’s survival is existential for its core leadership.
History suggests they would respond to internal unrest with overwhelming force. For destabilization to translate into meaningful political change, a sustained and prolonged campaign would likely be required. Even then, the most probable outcome may not be democratic transition, but internal chaos — potentially pushing Iran toward civil conflict.
That scenario carries significant regional and global risks.
3. Destroying Iran’s Nuclear Program
A military strike could significantly damage nuclear facilities. Precision strikes may delay progress and degrade infrastructure.
But strikes cannot eliminate scientific knowledge, human capital, or political will. Nor is it certain that all highly enriched material could be located and destroyed.
At best, military action may delay the program. It is unlikely to eliminate it permanently. Iran would almost certainly attempt reconstruction — potentially with greater determination and fewer constraints.
4. Eliminating Iran’s Missile Capabilities
A broad campaign could substantially degrade Iran’s missile inventory and production infrastructure.
However, Iran’s missile program is domestically based and central to its defense doctrine. It is viewed as a pillar of deterrence against superior conventional forces. Even after heavy losses, Tehran would likely prioritize rebuilding these capabilities.
The result may be temporary degradation rather than permanent removal.
5. Forcing Iran Back to Negotiations on Better Terms
There is an assumption that military pressure could coerce Tehran into accepting a more favorable agreement.
Yet past confrontations suggest that the Iranian leadership may choose endurance over capitulation. The regime may calculate that time increases political pressure on Washington to de-escalate, particularly if the conflict becomes prolonged or regionally destabilizing.
Rather than producing immediate concessions, military action could harden Iran’s negotiating position — or eliminate diplomatic channels entirely.
6. Targeting Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei
Some might argue that removing the Supreme Leader could fundamentally alter Iran’s trajectory.
However, decapitation strikes often produce unpredictable outcomes. Iran’s political system is institutionalized, not purely personalist. Removing Khamenei could trigger retaliation from Iran and its regional proxies and potentially force the United States into a much broader conflict.
It is also unclear whether such a move would moderate Iranian policy. It could just as easily radicalize it.
The Strategic Bottom Line
There is no question about U.S. military superiority in a direct confrontation. The real issue is strategic clarity.
For the first time in decades, the possibility of direct U.S.–Iran military confrontation raises the prospect of open interstate war rather than proxy conflict. That demands disciplined thinking about ends, ways, and means.
No available objective appears easily attainable. All carry significant second- and third-order effects. Many outcomes could be unpredictable — and not necessarily favorable to U.S. interests.
Thus, before initiating military action, policymakers must clearly define what “success” looks like — and whether the likely costs, duration, escalation risks, and regional consequences align with America’s broader strategic priorities.
Military capability is not the same as strategic advantage.

Every single point @citrinowicz is making is spot on. Highly recommend :
Washington and Jerusalem Have Learned the Wrong Lessons from Their Wars with Iran
I regret to say that neither the United States nor Israel appears to have learned the most important lessons from their previous military campaigns against Iran.
Five realities must be understood before launching another war:
1. Iran will not surrender. Even a far more intense and destructive military campaign, including strikes against critical energy infrastructure, is unlikely to force Tehran into capitulation. The Iranian leadership will not simply abandon its nuclear ambitions or ballistic missile program under military pressure. If anything, another war could further strengthen its determination to preserve these capabilities.
2. Washington and Jerusalem cannot dictate the duration of the war. Anyone who believes another military campaign can be limited to a few days is making a dangerous assumption. Iran's response is likely to be extensive and violent, potentially forcing the United States and Israel to launch additional strikes. Once this cycle begins, controlling the pace, scope, and duration of the conflict will become extraordinarily difficult.
3. There is no military silver bullet. Striking Iranian infrastructure, including energy facilities, will not magically resolve the Iranian challenge. On the contrary, such attacks could trigger massive Iranian retaliation against energy infrastructure across the Middle East, with devastating regional and global consequences.
4. Iran will have surprises of its own. American and Israeli planners should not assume that Tehran will respond only with missiles and drones. Iran could attempt to disrupt undersea communications cables, conduct unconventional operations, or even launch limited ground operations against vulnerable targets in Kuwait or Bahrain. These are potential scenarios, not certainties, but they cannot be dismissed.
Moreover, another confrontation could rapidly become a regional war, with Hezbollah, Iraqi Shiite militias, and the Houthis likely to join the fighting in one form or another. The assumption that a war against Iran can remain geographically contained is deeply questionable.
5. The global economic consequences could be severe. Another major conflict would almost certainly put substantial upward pressure on global energy prices, particularly if Iranian energy facilities were targeted and Tehran retaliated against Gulf energy infrastructure. The consequences would extend far beyond the Middle East, affecting global markets, inflation, and economic stability.
The bottom line is simple: Without a return to a diplomatic agreement, another military escalation in the Gulf increasingly appears difficult to avoid. But that does not mean another war would achieve its strategic objectives.
Even a highly destructive campaign targeting Iran's most critical infrastructure may fail to produce meaningful strategic gains. Instead, the United States and Israel could find themselves trapped in another prolonged war of attrition, with no decisive outcome, mounting economic costs, and an increasingly unstable Middle East.
The fundamental lesson of the previous campaigns should be clear: Military superiority does not automatically translate into strategic success.
Before launching another war, Washington and Jerusalem must answer a basic question: What exactly can another military campaign achieve that the previous ones failed to accomplish, and what is the exit strategy if Iran refuses to back down?
There is no kinetic solution to the Iranian challenge. Ignoring that reality risks repeating the same strategic mistakes, only at a much higher cost.

Playing with Fire: Is Israel Provoking Another War with Iran?
From increasingly aggressive statements by senior Israeli officials to reports of Israeli air exercises simulating strikes near Iran’s borders, there is growing concern that some in Israel may be deliberately pushing Tehran toward a military response.
This is particularly dangerous at a time when Iran is already on high alert, anticipating another possible Israeli attack and preparing to respond forcefully.
The latest developments raise serious questions about whether Israel’s political and security leadership is genuinely committed to preventing another confrontation, particularly in the sensitive period surrounding the Israeli elections.
Conducting offensive air exercises under these circumstances is playing with fire. Either those responsible are seriously underestimating how Tehran might interpret such actions, or they are knowingly accepting the risk of provoking an Iranian response.
The danger is that Israel could find itself dragged into another major confrontation with Iran, one whose strategic objectives remain unclear, whose consequences could be devastating, and whose timing inevitably raises questions about domestic political considerations.
After two wars that failed to eliminate the Iranian threat, the last thing Israel needs is another military confrontation without a realistic strategy for achieving sustainable security gains or a credible exit strategy.
Deterrence requires strategic judgment, not reckless brinkmanship. At a moment when the risk of miscalculation is exceptionally high, deliberately raising tensions is not a demonstration of strength. It is a dangerous gamble that could lead to a war neither Israel nor the United States can easily control.

In my interview with @ynetnews , I argued that there is no immediate military or strategic justification for another war with Iran, especially days before Israel’s elections.
After two wars, Iran’s regime remains in power, its missile capabilities are being rebuilt, and the nuclear challenge remains unresolved.
Another war could engulf the entire region, devastate Israel’s economy, and still fail to achieve its objectives.
Before launching another war, we must ask a simple question: What would it achieve that the previous two wars failed to accomplish?
Israel’s national security must not be subordinated to political calculations.

A Very Serious Matter.
A. This must be stated as clearly as possible: There is no justification for launching another campaign against Iran before the election, or immediately afterward. Iran is indeed rebuilding its military capabilities and continuing to expand its power, but there is currently no “smoking gun” requiring an immediate attack, certainly not a military operation that could lead to the postponement of Israel’s elections.
B. It is difficult to ignore the fact that the Iranian issue has become part of Israel’s political calculations. This is an extremely dangerous situation. It could lead Israel into another campaign before there has been a serious professional and public discussion about what failed in previous campaigns, why military achievements did not translate into strategic change, and, above all, what leads anyone to believe that another campaign would accomplish what has not been achieved so far. Israel cannot go to war again before understanding why previous wars failed to achieve their objectives.
C. Another point must be understood: anyone willing to go to war two weeks before an election may also be willing to do so immediately afterward. The most important question, therefore, is where the professional leadership stands, first and foremost, the defense establishment, and what it is doing to prevent a move that could drag Israel into a difficult, prolonged campaign with no clear strategic purpose.
A government that has lost its moral and public legitimacy cannot treat launching another war as a routine political decision, especially when the cost could be devastating for Israel’s citizens, economy, and national security.
Another war with Iran is not inevitable. Before deciding to launch one, it is essential to demonstrate that it is necessary, that it has achievable objectives, and that a clear exit strategy exists. At present, none of these questions has received a convincing answer.

Netanyahu pushes to resume strikes against Iran ft.trib.al/HektInH
After two wars with Iran, Israel still faces the same threats
Following two military campaigns and sweeping claims of historic achievements, Tehran is still rebuilding its capabilities, the missile threat persists and the nuclear issue remains unresolved. The question is whether Israel has learned the necessary lessons ahead of another confrontation.

Trump’s Gaza Plan Faces a Fundamental Question: Who in Israel Can Actually Deliver?
The only realistic way to prevent a return to large-scale fighting in Gaza, which would further devastate Israel’s international legitimacy, is the full implementation of President Trump’s 20-point plan.
There are no good options in Gaza. But as long as Israel remains unwilling to allow the Palestinian Authority to return, Trump’s plan may be the only viable path forward.
This raises a fundamental question for the Trump administration: What kind of Israeli government would actually be capable of implementing the plan?
A far-right coalition whose members openly advocate the displacement of Palestinians from Gaza? Or a more moderate right-wing coalition that recognizes the urgent need to rebuild Israel’s relations with the international community and restore its international standing?
The answer has significant implications for US policy. Washington needs to consider whether its political engagement with Israel, including its endorsement of politicians who rely on the support of far-right elements, is consistent with the practical requirements of implementing its own Gaza initiative.
Ultimately, the success of Trump’s 20-point plan will depend not only on American diplomacy, but also on whether Israel has a government willing and able to carry it out.
A durable peace in Gaza requires an end to Hamas rule, security for Israel, and a better future for the Palestinian people. President Trump’s Board of Peace is working with our partners to turn that vision into reality. Important perspective from the @WSJ Editorial Board.
There is a fundamental contradiction in Netanyahu’s argument.
If Iran and Hezbollah genuinely want him to lose the upcoming Israeli elections, the last thing they would do is launch a military confrontation that could postpone those elections and give Netanyahu the justification to initiate another major war against Iran and Hezbollah.
This contradiction raises serious questions about Netanyahu’s intentions. His repeated warnings about an imminent Iranian attack appear designed to push the narrative that Tehran is preparing to strike Israel in the near future. Such a narrative could serve two purposes: shifting Israel’s domestic political debate toward national security and laying the groundwork for justifying another military campaign against Iran.
Meanwhile, Tehran’s immediate priority appears to be increasing pressure on Trump by driving up oil prices and demonstrating the economic and political costs of the confrontation. The Iranian leadership seems to believe that higher energy prices could inflict significant political damage on Trump and the Republicans ahead of the US midterm elections.
Iran is certainly preparing for the possibility of another military confrontation, particularly in light of repeated threats from Trump and Netanyahu. But there is a crucial difference between preparing for war and deciding to initiate one. Iranian military preparations should not automatically be interpreted as evidence of an imminent attack.
The greatest danger is that Netanyahu’s rhetoric, combined with potentially provocative military operations, could trigger precisely the escalation he claims to be warning against.
Beyond that, there is a fundamental question about the strategic logic of launching another war against Iran: What exactly could a new military campaign achieve that previous wars failed to accomplish? And would those potential gains justify the enormous security, economic, and human costs Israel would likely pay?
Before rushing into another confrontation, Israeli leaders need to clearly explain what the objectives would be, how they could realistically be achieved, and, perhaps most importantly, what the exit strategy would look like.
Otherwise, Israel risks once again paying an enormous price without fundamentally changing the strategic reality.
Wars should be judged not by how much destruction they inflict on the enemy, but by the strategic reality they leave behind. And after two wars with Iran, that is precisely the question Israeli decision-makers must confront before contemplating a third.
At a time when both sides are on high alert, the risk of miscalculation is enormous. The last thing the region needs is another war driven by political calculations, mutual suspicion, and the absence of a clear strategic objective.

@citrinowicz money quote:
“Any serious planning must also begin with the assumption that Iran will retaliate forcefully and that Tehran, not just Washington or Jerusalem, will have a say in how the conflict unfolds and when it ends.”
“Finish the Job Together”? What Exactly Is Left to Achieve?
I would genuinely like to understand what “finish the job together” actually means. What exactly can the United States and Israel accomplish that they failed to achieve during 39 days of fighting?
Another war with Iran is far from guaranteed to achieve its stated objectives. What it could certainly do, however, is dramatically worsen the global economic situation while imposing enormous costs on the Israeli economy and its citizens.
Iran has already demonstrated that it has no intention of surrendering. And there is little reason to believe that airpower alone can bring down the Islamic Republic, even if the United States and Israel target Iran's energy infrastructure. Such attacks would almost certainly trigger severe Iranian retaliation against energy facilities across the region, with potentially devastating consequences for global energy markets.
Before talking about “finishing the job,” policymakers in Washington and Jerusalem need to answer some fundamental questions: What realistic strategic objectives could another military campaign achieve? At what cost? And, perhaps most importantly, what is the exit strategy?
Any serious planning must also begin with the assumption that Iran will retaliate forcefully and that Tehran, not just Washington or Jerusalem, will have a say in how the conflict unfolds and when it ends.
The United States and Israel should not confuse the ability to inflict additional destruction with the ability to achieve a strategic victory. After 39 days of fighting, that distinction should be clearer than ever.
Before launching another war, there must be a realistic assessment of what military force can actually deliver, a clear political objective, and a credible strategy for ending the conflict.
Wars are much easier to start than to end. And the consequences of another miscalculation could extend far beyond Israel and Iran.

"A job to finish."
President Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu are discussing the possibility of renewed strikes against Iran, with Netanyahu telling Trump they will "finish it together."
According to Axios, Secretary of War Pete Hegseth made a surprise visit to Israel, meeting Netanyahu at an air base as Israeli fighter jets conduct overnight drills toward Iran.
