A lovely touch. Chapeau.
Remembering the late, great Dolly, who brought joy, comfort and inspiration to so many - including the millions of children given free books through her Imagination Library. We will always ❤️ you.

In Ireland, you have on one side law abiding citizens, over worked and over taxed, struggling with housing, poor infrastructure and public services and sometimes terrorised by criminals. And on the other side a bunch of insufferable smug politicians, NGOs and activities given free reign by the mainstream media to control the narrative and tell us everything is fine and we should be greatful for their wisdom. It’s infuriating.

This must be a very worrying time for someone who's dumped a body in a reservoir.

Walk across an arable field of British wheat in summer. Count the species. You will find: wheat. Possibly a few resistant weeds the herbicide didn't catch. A handful of crows. Some pigeons surveying for damage. Roughly nothing else. Walk across a properly managed permanent pasture in the same county. You will find: 30 to 60 plant species in a good sward. Wildflowers. Clover. Vetches. Plantain. Ryegrass and timothy. Foraging bumblebees. Skylarks nesting in the longer patches. Hares in the margins. Beetles, dung beetles in particular, doing the work of two ecosystems at once. Field voles, kestrels overhead waiting for them. Swallows hoovering up insects above the cattle. The cattle are the reason the second field is biodiverse. Their grazing maintains the open structure. Their dung feeds the invertebrate web. Their hooves create the disturbance ground-nesting birds require. Remove the cattle, the pasture turns to scrub, and the species count crashes. The farm with the cows is the wildlife refuge. The farm with the wheat is the empty room. This is the inversion that nobody who writes for a Sunday supplement has worked out yet.

The Government is spending nearly €4 million a day on helping people - and we will do more. There is no truth to opposition claims that the Government is making money from this crisis.

Today saw electoral history in Ireland with a record shattering protest vote in the form of spoiled ballots. There was a very good ground campaign in some areas and hats off to those brilliant people that did them. However, it’s important to say that without @X, the opportunity for the #SpoilTheVote campaign get its message out would have been fraction of what it was. We were largely shut out of mainstream media, who gave us the minimum level of exposure necessary to be able to save some face for themselves but @X gave us a platform where we could get thousands and thousands of views, post out video messages and more. Take a bow @X 🇮🇪☘️ @elonmusk

I sit in Parliament listening to these ministers, and it’s all just so depressing - the vast majority of them have never run a business, and it SHOWS. You would not believe how bad it is. They think ‘work’ means turning up to an office between 9 and 5, answering a few emails, and going home at the end of the day. Nice lunch break, few coffees away from the desk, probably a smoking break or several. It doesn’t - not for the millions of men and women who actually create the wealth that funds the state. Running a small business isn’t a job. It’s a way of life. It is life. It’s 24/7/365. It’s relentless. You are the accountant, HR department, compliance officer, cleaner, marketer, and customer service team - all in one. There’s no sick pay, no safety net, and no taxpayer-funded pension waiting for you. Holiday? Good luck. If you do manage to get away, it’s checking the phone all day, every day. Wife/husband obviously getting pissed off. We’ve all been there... It’s all on you. Every invoice chased, every tax deadline met, every bit of red tape navigated is on you. And if you make one mistake, one error, one small slip-up, the state comes after you - in a relentlessly efficient manner that is never afforded to us when we ask questions of it. Most MPs have no idea what that feels like. They just don’t. We’re going to see more of this in the budget I’m sure. More hurt. More pain. More tax. They don’t get it. They don’t understand that when a small business owner gets hit with another tax, it’s not absorbed by a ‘budget’ - it’s taken straight out of their family’s pocket. There is no ‘deficit’ in the business world - that’s called going bust. And they certainly don’t understand what real risk looks like. Politicians can vote through a policy on Monday and forget it by Tuesday - a small business owner lives with the consequences of that policy for years, decades. The MP monthly salary is safe. It always has been. In the public sector before, and in the public sector after - if not that, some charity/NGO funded entirely by the public sector. GET A REAL JOB. If MPs actually spent a week running a small firm - paying suppliers, tackling VAT, navigating health and safety law, sorting out HR issues, chasing clients for payment, trying to expand while staying compliant with everything from GDPR to local planning regulations - they’d legislate very differently. I can promise you that. They’d realise that most of Britain’s problems could be solved by the state doing less, not more. Cutting tax. Simplifying regulation. Slashing back the HRification of the country. Trusting people who actually produce things to get on with it. Instead, we have a political class that talks endlessly about ‘growth’ while brutally punishing the only people capable of delivering it - especially going after the family businesses/farms, which is a particularly spiteful policy decision. Small business owners are people who work harder than almost anyone in Parliament could imagine - and who are treated worse for it. Britain’s small businesses don’t succeed because of politicians, they survive in spite of them.

Ireland has a very large and far reaching state funded media. This explains how mediocrity and unaccountability perseveres in this country, how there is no healthy competition of ideas. How all the political options range from standard centre left to far left. We paid a high price for this on the ground this last 16 days. So reading the news, while it’s covered, the punches are being pulled massively. Pay to play, control, manipulate. It’s a very harmful disservice to the people of Ireland. It’s a daily diet of soft propaganda.

Last night I received a message on my Mam’s community WhatsApp to say there’s a van going around “selling mattresses” targeting elderly people and to look out for a particular car.
In my previous point where I mention the need to surge Garda into the areas of the country without power. Let me further explain. I know first hand that there are older people staying in cold homes and not going to family in other parts of the country (with power) because they are afraid that their homes will be robbed. This is because alarm systems are working without power and communications links and the reports of gangs going around these areas looking for targets of opportunity. I know that some bad elements were checking potential targets even in the hours ahead of the storm hitting because we experienced it ourselves. I don’t know to what degree that was an isolated incident but people are concerned. If people know there are much more intensive Garda patrols, they may be more willing to go to shelter with family out of area until power is restored.
