Pickup Magnet Materials - AlNiCo, Ceramic and Rare Earth, 1930s-2026
Permanent magnets establish magnetic fields around ferromagnetic guitar strings, allowing string vibration to induce voltage in pickup coils. Three principal magnet families are AlNiCo, ceramic ferrite and rare earth.
They differ in composition, magnetic energy density, coercivity, cost and stability. Magnet selection influences pickup performance but does not independently determine tone or output.
AlNiCo - Aluminum, Nickel and Cobalt
Developed commercially during the 1930s, AlNiCo became the dominant material in early electric guitar pickups.
Common grades include AlNiCo 2, 3, 4, 5 and 8, each differing in composition and magnetic properties.
AlNiCo 2 typically provides ~1.5-2 MGOe maximum energy product; AlNiCo 3, ~1.3-1.5 MGOe; AlNiCo 5, ~5-6 MGOe; and AlNiCo 8, ~5-6 MGOe.
Fender traditionally employed AlNiCo rod magnets in Stratocaster and Telecaster pickups. Gibson used AlNiCo bars beneath steel pole pieces in P-90s and humbuckers.
AlNiCo’s relatively low coercivity makes certain grades susceptible to demagnetization. Magnet dimensions, orientation and charge level influence field strength.
Ceramic - Hard Ferrite
Commercially established during the 1950s, ceramic magnets generally consist of strontium or barium ferrite.
Typical grades provide ~3-4.5 MGOe maximum energy product. High coercivity makes them resistant to demagnetization.
Ceramic magnets are inexpensive, chemically stable and widely used in humbuckers, rail pickups and mass-produced single-coils.
Ceramic single-coils frequently employ steel pole pieces magnetized by ceramic bars beneath the coil.
Their association with high-output pickups reflects overall engineering, including winding count, magnet dimensions, pole geometry and electrical loading. Ceramic composition alone does not guarantee greater output.
Rare Earth - Neodymium and Samarium-Cobalt
Rare-earth magnets introduced substantially higher magnetic energy density.
Samarium-cobalt became commercially important during the 1970s, offering ~18-32 MGOe maximum energy product.
Neodymium-iron-boron emerged during the 1980s, with commercial grades spanning ~27-52 MGOe.
These materials permit compact magnetic assemblies producing substantial fields. Applications include specialized guitar pickups, compact transducers and selected active or low-impedance designs.
Samarium-cobalt offers good temperature stability. Neodymium generally provides higher energy density but varies in thermal performance and corrosion resistance.
Magnetic Strength versus Pickup Output
Maximum energy product, measured in MGOe, describes available magnetic energy density, not field strength at the string or pickup output.
Magnetic flux density is measured in gauss or tesla. Pickup voltage depends on changing magnetic flux through the coil.
Faraday’s law:
V = -N(dΦ/dt)
N = coil turns; Φ = magnetic flux; t = time.
Magnet geometry, winding count, inductance, resistance, capacitance, pickup height and electrical loading influence the resulting signal.
Historical Development
1930s - Commercial AlNiCo magnets.
1950s - Ceramic ferrite becomes established.
1970s - Samarium-cobalt enters commercial production.
1980s - Neodymium-iron-boron becomes available.
1990s-2026 - Continued refinement of traditional magnets and specialized rare-earth designs.
AlNiCo remains associated with vintage pickup construction. Ceramic offers economical, demagnetization-resistant designs. Rare-earth materials enable compact, high-energy magnetic systems.
No material inherently guarantees a particular sound. Pickup tone results from magnetic field geometry, vibrating strings, coil construction and the connected electrical circuit.

Fines don't work against a $3.9 trillion dollar corporation unless you're suing them for $3.9 trillion dollars and then bankrupting their CEOs and corporate leadership. Fines will NEVER work against the billionaire class. Google does what it wants because it can.

A two-hour flight, mud like quicksand and a trapped mum and baby. This is elephant conservation in action: emergency response for nature’s giants.
When friends far up in Samburu called us for help, we knew we had to act. We have unique expertise in this kind of rescue: last year alone, our Aerial Unit helped extract 17 elephants from similar predicaments.
Our pilot loaded one of our fixed-wing aircraft with our custom elephant straps and flew north. This was the scene that greeted him: an adult and calf stuck fast in drying mud.
Together with personnel from Ol Malo, Loisaba Conservancy and the Kenya Wildlife Service, we worked the straps around the elephants. First came the calf, who was easier to haul out, then the adult, who proved a much greater challenge. Mission complete, both elephants slowly got their bearings and walked off.
It’s the height of the dry season, and times are difficult across the country. When Kenya’s elephants need us, wherever they may be, we will answer the call. Your donations make it possible: sheldrickwildlifetrust.org/d…
