The Anglican tradition, as I have received it: "the absolute priority of the Bible, a catholic loyalty to the sacraments, and a habit of cultural sensitivity and intellectual flexibility."

Amongst the very fine Remembrancetide stamps issued by Royal Mail, I think this movingly captures the quiet, reserved, understated dignity that should mark Remembrance.

In the early hours of 22 October, C Company of the Seaforth Highlanders of Canada reached the church of Pieve Sestina, about 500 yards short of the main road north of Cesena. Including the tank hunters, Maj. Stewart Lynch had about 50 men. They had no tanks and no anti-tank guns, and the river behind them had risen six feet in five hours. Enemy tanks could be heard moving nearby.
Sgt. K. P. Thompson laid a string of Hawkins grenades across the road at the junction beside the church and camouflaged them. Smith led his PIAT team across an open field under fire to a roadside ditch, then went back across the road with Pte. James Tennant for a second PIAT.
First into the trap came a Volkswagen staff car, which passed between the mines. Behind it, a self-propelled gun struck one, lost a track and was finished off with PIAT bombs and grenades. Then came a Panther with infantry riding on its hull, sweeping the ditches with its machine guns. Tennant was hit.
At 30 feet, in full view of the enemy, Smith fired. The Panther stopped and began backing away. About ten German infantrymen jumped off and charged him. Smith moved out into the road and killed four of them with his Tommy gun at point-blank range, and the rest fell back. Another tank opened fire and more infantry closed in. Gathering abandoned magazines from a ditch, Smith stood over his wounded friend until, in the words of his citation, the enemy “finally gave up and withdrew in disorder.” He then got Tennant to cover and medical help, and went back to his place by the road.
“In the end there was just Jimmy and I, and then he got wounded so that left only me,” he said years later. “So I had to stay out there by myself while everybody else was in the church.”
By 0600 the Germans had gone. Smith’s Victoria Cross was the only one ever awarded to a Seaforth, and the third and last won by a Canadian in Italy.
Will be picking up my poppy at the Canadian Consulate in Minneapolis.
“Each year, Canadians step up with amazing support for the National Poppy Campaign,” says Sharon McKeown, Dominion President. “Their generosity and caring are what allow us to host a range of programs and support initiatives for our Veterans and their families across the country.”
For a third year, the Legion’s collaboration with Amazon Canada will allow Canadians to receive Remembrance lapel Poppies at their doors. People across our vast country can fulfill their wish to wear a Poppy, including where there are no Legion branches or it is more difficult to find one.
All funds raised locally during the campaign stay in the communities where they were donated. Close to 20 million dollars is donated to the Poppy Fund throughout the year to help Veterans, with much of that assistance coming in during the National Poppy Campaign. Funds go directly into initiatives to support Canada’s Veterans and their families and help promote Remembrance.

We have returned to the Apostles and the old Catholic Fathers. We have planted no new religion, but only preserved the old that was undoubtedly founded and used by the Apostles of Christ and other holy Fathers of the Primitive Church.

On this day back in 1813, the Canadians led by Lieut-Colonel Charles de Salaberry defeated a much larger invading American Army at the Battle of Chateauguay. It was the first time that Anglo & French Canadians had fought side by side together in defence of Canada.

I'm shocked, shocked to find: "the administration had manipulated “something so sacred” into a political photo opportunity twelve days before the midterms".
NEW:
Archbishop Jeffrey Grob of Milwaukee apologized on Sunday for praying over President Trump in the Oval Office last week, and he accused the White House of posting video of the prayer without the bishops’ consent.

On this day, Alexander Dunn of York, Ontario became the first Canadian to win the Victoria Cross for saving two of his fellow soldiers during the famous Charge of the Light Brigade. In 1866 he was made Colonel of the 33rd Regiment, at the time the youngest Colonel in the Empire.
