Apple just released the iPhone 18 Pro Max.
The first iPhone with a variable aperture camera. The first iPhone with Pro Controls that give manual control over aperture, shutter speed, and white balance. A 2nm A20 Pro chip with a Dual 16-core Neural Engine double the AI processing power of the previous generation. Up to 45 hours of video playback. 5 minutes of charging for 7 hours of use. Siri AI with onscreen awareness. And iOS 27 with Liquid Glass, the biggest visual redesign since iOS 7.
Millions of people bought it. Most of them will take it out of the box, transfer their old phone, and use it identically to the iPhone they replaced same apps, same layout, same camera at default settings, same Action Button set to silent mode, same Camera Control button pressed once to open the camera and never used for anything else.
A professional photographer who’s been shooting on pre-production iPhone 18 Pro Max units since August and has tested every camera feature Apple built into this phone told his assistant something during a shoot that reframed everything about how the iPhone 18 Pro Max is meant to be used.
