ALT According to the report, approximately 13.4 million babies were born prematurely before completing 37 weeks of gestation in 2020. Climate change has been identified as a contributing factor, particularly in regions where significant amounts of fossil fuels are burned. The report further explains that air pollution increases the risk of pre-term births by 52% in mothers with asthma, while extreme heat exposure and rising temperatures contribute to a 16% increase in risk. Startlingly, the report unveils that in 2020 alone, nearly one million newborns (equivalent to one baby every 40 seconds) lost their lives due to complications arising from pre-term birth. Additionally, millions more survived but were left with disabilities as a result, underscoring the profound impact of this issue.
