Mark, I agree. If anything, that rebuild started in 2002. Toews and Kane walked into a core that had already been developing for five years. They made the playoffs two seasons later. Chicago added some excellent free agents for that 2008–09 run, then brought in Hossa the following season.
Right now, we’re watching our young core find its footing. We’re still a few prospects and key free-agent additions away. Most of these guys haven’t even played 200 NHL games yet.
Frankly, I like what I’m seeing from the two rookies. None of our current young core has reached 300 NHL games. Keith and Seabrook both hit that milestone during the 2008–09 season, after debuting in 2005.
Bedard debuted in 2023 and is now in his fourth NHL season. In terms of the rebuild timeline, that’s roughly where Keith and Seabrook were in 2008–09. The difference is that Bedard entered the league at 18, while Keith was 22 and Seabrook was 20.
Development takes time. We’re judging players who are still learning the NHL against the finished products of a championship team.
