.@Janeese4DC I voted for you today because I had high hopes for our city, for change that is so desperately needed here. I feel completely duped by your promises to root out corruption and end Bowser-era cronyism & kickback schemes. Why is Trayon White continuously celebrated by your camp in this way?
CM @trayonwhite speaks at @Janeese4DC watch party. He says JLG is “anointed and appointed.” He also says the process should be respected and the DC Dems should be the ones to name the next member of the council.

All of the mid century FedGov buildings in SW were a giant mistake and it would be insane to keep them for myopic historic preservation reasons. It’s a generational opportunity to rebuild that area in a way that’s much more aesthetically pleasing, useful and functional.

Buckle up for a lap around the nation’s capital.
Ride along the 1.7-mile Freedom 250 Grand Prix track, feeling every turn as you fly down Pennsylvania Avenue and past the Washington Monument, U.S. Capitol and Smithsonian museums.
The first-ever INDYCAR race around the National Mall takes over D.C. Aug. 22-23, with Sunday’s race airing live on FOX.
Highlands Tavern is planning to open at 3421 Connecticut Ave NW in a few weeks with pub fare including wood-fired pizzas, a kids menu, and weekday HH from 4-6pm with $10 pizza & discounted drinks. They'll open at 11am every day and serve as a Notre Dame football bar. Draft menus:

there's this weird notion in America that you can't have commerce in a park. To me it is the absolute worst thing about Washington DC. but it also exists all over the country.
Europe figured out concessions decades ago. Every park has a kiosk: espresso, pastry, maybe a spritz or a beer at 6pm. Small operator pays rent, city gets revenue, park gets foot traffic and eyes on the grass. Everyone wins.
SF has 230+ parks and almost none of this. Dolores Park froze a Blue Bottle cart permit over community outreach complaints. Coit Tower took years of hand-wringing over a removable food kiosk (unsurprisingly: Peskin territory). Meanwhile we wonder why maintenance budgets are tight and parks feel empty at 7am.
Give me a coffee kiosk in every major park. Let the concession help pay for upkeep. Let foot traffic take care of public safety. Create a third space — a square where people can meet instead of shouting at each other on social media. I’ll die on this hill.

One of the ways you can tell these subdistricts are a bad idea is to look at existing vibrant neighborhoods. Georgetown, Dupont, U St, etc weren't built this way.
A neighborhood should be shaped by the people and businesses that show up to live, work, and play there.
.@OPinDC has a survey on the future of H St. Their recommendations generally move us in the right direction, but they're also a microcosm of the issue with our current planning regime. A detailed 🧵

Pennsylvania is low key the American urbanism promised land. Just hundreds of beautiful, walkable, living little Main Street towns all over the state.
I wouldn’t call it a dead zone, it’s populated most of the time, but imo the biggest issue with the Mall (which could certainly have more trees) is what’s around it. There are very few people who live near the Mall, and restaurant/entertainment options are limited

public transit makes driving better.
We don't have it in Detroit. Parking for Lions games hits $100. traffic adds 30+ minutes. and do you wanna drive drunk? uber is $$ and still has strangers
Here's a Nats game in DC. Every one of these people is one less car on the road.

One of the key questions I have is "Who is going to clean house?" And I think any of these three, in addition to their strong urbanist credentials, are going to shake up DC government.

Im on the fence too but tie breaker for me is the Mayor fully controls DDOT & transportation policy & McD is terrible there while the DC Council has as much control on housing as the Mayor so Mendo & his stupid housing takes will be as important as JLGs (or McDs) kooky ones.

The question voters should ask is simple: when key transportation projects faced controversy, where did @kenyanmcduffie stand?

My first trip to the neighborhood of North Cleveland Park (aka Van Ness) since 2019 to see 1) that there is now an actual bar (I’m a sucker for those window outdoor bar seating), 2) the historic former Burger King, and 3) the amazing Bread Furst bakery

facts. and let's remember that Green Zone had to cut staff bc of the loss of customers. this is precisely how NOT to (a) design public policy nor (b) build urban space around human beings. we can do so much better... and do right by our residents & workers & small biz

“We desperately need a world where kids can be let loose in a neighborhood and told to come home for dinner. That requires more walkable places, which in turn requires a fuller and smarter discussion about walkability.”
The federal government keeps a Walkability Index.
It’s really bad.
The Trump Admin should make it better.
Start by moving it from the EPA to Transportation (@SecDuffy).
Then take traffic volume and speed into account.
Maybe consider schools, sidewalks, and playgrounds.

.@dcpolicycenter has a fascinating new report on what ails D.C.'s housing market, and how to fix it. In short: Change rules to allow more building in more places, trim back on bureaucracy that slows construction, unclog the eviction process, and more. dcpolicycenter.org/publicati…
