What is a qubit, and why does it matter for crypto?
The word “qubit” was coined by physicist Benjamin Schumacher in his 1995 paper “Quantum coding” (Physical Review A).
Day 1 of our November post-quantum education series.

While research and upgrades are important, @ethereum, Mochimo has been quantum-resistant from day one.
Every transaction since the June 25, 2018 genesis block has been signed with WOTS+ (hash-based signatures). No elliptic curves, no discrete log problem for Shor’s algorithm to attack, and no migration needed.

Breaking RSA-2048 with about 23,000 qubits in 3.14 days.
That is the latest estimate for Shor’s algorithm, from @Alice__Bob. It needs about 40x fewer physical qubits than @GoogleQuantumAI’s 2025 estimate of under 1 million. 🧵

Breaking RSA-2048 with 23,000 cat qubits. 🐈 In 3.14 days
This is the finding of our new paper, the latest resource estimate for Shor’s algorithm, the benchmark the whole field uses to compare quantum hardware 📄
The results are a record low for total quantum resources at this speed of execution, about 40 times fewer physical qubits than @GoogleQuantumAI 's Craig Gidney 2025 estimate. 🏁
RSA-2048 is the lock behind secure websites, banking and software updates 🔐 Shor's algorithm has been able to break it, on paper since 1994. Nobody has built the machine yet, but every year the estimate of how big it needs to be gets a little smaller.
In 2019, the best estimate was 20 million qubits. In 2024, ours was just under 100,000. Now 22,593, in 3.14 days. Yes, pi 🥧
Small isn't enough. Fast isn't enough. The new study optimizes for both. 😼
Bitcoin, Ethereum and most blockchains aren't secure either, about 30,000 qubits would be needed to crack a Bitcoin key in about an hour ₿ ⏳
How we got here, what it means for cryptography, and when it all converges, our CEO Théau Peronnin talks about it in the blog 👇

Development of altcoins between 2014-2023 required at minimum a Computer Science degree or equivalent experience
Development of altcoins since 2024 only requires you to be a faggot
Nice oled screen upgrade but I’m not trying to touch my screen. Hate fingerprints on my laptop screen. 🤣

@Google is previewing a crypto custody system today in New York: Google Multi-Party Compute.
It splits a private key across separate systems, so no single machine ever holds the whole key.
Even so, the signature it produces is still ECDSA or Ed25519.

A quantum computer just hit 99.9995% accuracy.
Bitcoiners should care about one thing in that headline, and it isn't the number.
It's the word "one."
One logical qubit, built from up to 37 physical qubits.
Breaking Bitcoin's signatures takes roughly 2,000 logical qubits running billions of operations together without failing. That's a systems problem, not a fidelity problem.
The error rate dropped sharply as they scaled the code. That's real progress, and it's the part worth watching.
But it isn't a jump toward a Bitcoin-breaking machine.
The number I watch is how many logical qubits can run one long computation together. Today, that number is small.
I track it at quantumrekt.com

Mochimo launched June 25, 2018, billed as the FIRST 100% quantum-resistant blockchain from the first block.
Eight years later, $MCM is still under $3M market cap.
Crypto gives memes billion-dollar valuations while this barely gets noticed.
Make it make sense.
