14 Defensive Wrinkles to Consider
1 - Come out of timeouts, quarter changes, and even free throws with a different defense. Opposing coaches will often call timeouts or start quarters with their teams talking about how to attack your defense - switch it up on them.
2 - When your team is shooting free throws, have a sub ready for the free throw shooter. This allows you to get your pressure set up, make appropriate quick substitutions, and to control the pace a little more.
3 - If a team is holding for the last shot, have a plan for taking some extra chances. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen teams turn it over when trying to hold the ball for a last possession…your team can take some risks here defensively (especially if you have fouls to give).
4 - Run zone on inbounds and then switch to man once the ball is inbounded. Or, just stay in your zone defense.
5 - Try to get a 5-second count on every sideline inbounds by using the inbound defender as a rover. You can instruct the defender (butt to the ball) to step in front of the point guard, first cutter, or whatever fits the scout.
6 - Consider morphing from zone to man or man to zone in the same possession. This is easier than it sounds with a little bit of practice.
7 - Instead of worrying about how to exactly guard every action your opponent is running, study their entries and blow those up instead. See how they react and adjust from there (or enjoy a steal/forced turnover).
8 - Use your entire defensive scout and base it on stopping the 2 best players. Never allow the best 2 players defeat you…make it the 3rd, 4th, and 5th best players
9 - Look for ways to press for free. Rather this is a soft zone or even soft full man/trapping…try and steal a possession per game just by pressing for free. This is also a good way to use clock.
10 - Trap the first dribble or pass out of a timeout/quarter change. Similar to blowing up the initial entry, jump the first dribble or pass across halfcourt.
11 - Have a “color call” for when you want your team to foul or take chances. For example, you might say “gold” when you want to foul (calling out FOUL FOUL FOUL forces officials to blow the whistle…it’s just human nature). You might get a steal. Or maybe yell “black” when you want to foul on purpose but also try and get steals.
12 - Teach your team both how to foul…and how not to foul. How to foul = fouling when defending an obvious layup and not giving up an And-1. How not to foul = show hands, use chest, etc.
13 - Jump the jump ball. Let the other team win the jump ball and immediately blitz it.
14 - Do what you can to make sure the point guard/primary ball handler doesn’t bring the ball up the floor. Over the course of the game, this wears teams down and messes with their flow.

30+ years of coaching taught me that winning isn't nearly as complicated as we make it.
Doing what winning requires? That's the hard part.
After watching Episode 1 of Nick Saban’s new documentary, I wrote down 15 golden nuggets that every coach and leader should hear.
Here they are:
1. Humility
“I don’t see myself as somebody that is different from other coaches and other people.”
Seven national championships, yet he doesn’t put himself above others. Great leaders have confidence without arrogance.
2. Purpose
“It wasn’t my life dream to be a coach.”
Sometimes your purpose finds you. Coaching becomes much bigger than the game when you realize the impact you can have on people.
3. Success
“It takes what it takes and then you make yourself do it.”
My favorite line. Discipline, preparation, work ethic, and accountability haven’t changed. Everybody wants success. Not everybody does what it requires.
4. Consistency
“My consistency and performance doesn’t vary.”
Do your players get the same coach after a win as after a loss? Your standards shouldn’t depend on your circumstances.
5. Clarity
“They wanted to be good. I don’t think they knew what they needed to do to be good.”
Wanting to win isn’t enough. Coaches must teach players exactly what winning behaviors look like.
6. Discipline
“If they can’t play with the right discipline then maybe they shouldn’t be playing.”
Your standards mean nothing if they don’t apply to your best players. Culture is defined by what you tolerate.
7. Perspective
“I always try to balance expectations with how important is it actually to win a game.”
I wanted to win every game I coached. But winning should never come at the expense of your values or relationships.
8. The Journey
“You have to keep players focused on the journey.”
Everybody loves talking about championships. Great teams focus on the daily habits that make championships possible.
9. Next Play
“Just play the next play.”
Mistakes happen. Adversity happens. Your response matters. Learn from it, let it go, and move forward.
10. Improvement
“Our focus is on improvement. We need to improve a lot.”
Winning doesn’t always mean you played well. Losing doesn’t always mean you played poorly. Keep getting better.
11. The Process
“It’s really hard to get people to focus on the process.”
The scoreboard is a lagging indicator. Great teams focus on the behaviors they can control that eventually produce winning.
12. Leadership Growth
“At Michigan State, I was a transactional leader.”
Everything was about winning and losing. Great coaching eventually becomes about more than outcomes. It’s about developing people.
13. The Future
“The future is where you’re going to live the rest of your life.”
Learn from the past, but don’t live there. Your future deserves more attention than your mistakes.
14. Execution
“You don’t focus on what you want to accomplish you focus on what you need to do to accomplish it.”
Goals provide direction. Daily actions produce results. Stop talking about what you want and start doing what it takes.
15. Accountability
“Being demanding is not necessarily being negative.”
There’s a difference between telling a player they’re not tough and telling them they’re not playing tough enough.
One attacks the person. The other corrects the behavior.
You can be demanding without being demeaning.

My Biggest Takeaway
After 30+ years of coaching, I keep coming back to Saban’s simplest message:
“It takes what it takes.”
There’s no secret formula.
Successful teams understand what winning requires and consistently do those things.
Everybody wants to win.
Are you willing to do what winning requires?

You don’t need Sportscode to start tracking what matters.
A Google Sheet can work.
One row = one possession.
Track:
Quarter → Action → Player → Result → Notes
Example after 40 possessions:
Ball Screen: 12 poss | 15 pts | 1.25 PPP
Post-Up: 8 poss | 6 pts | 0.75 PPP
Paint Touch: 14 poss | 20 pts | 1.43 PPP
Transition: 6 poss | 9 pts | 1.50 PPP
Now the sheet is actually helping you coach.
You can ask:
What action is producing?
What are we overusing?
What needs to change?
You don’t need complicated software.
You need good tags and a good question.

The announcer called it "another backdoor play." Like it just happened.
It didn't just happen.
Watch the clip again. Andre Jackson picks Cade up full court. Fights over the screen. Sells out to steal the handoff. That's good, hard defense — and it's also a decision. Dick DeVenzio wrote in *STUFF Good Players Should Know* that a defender who overplays is "knowingly risking giving up the backdoor cut." The pressure isn't a problem to survive. It's information.
Cade read the information. Ivey read it too — he never forced the handoff Jackson was hunting. Back to Duren, and Cade was already gone. That's the part DeVenzio cared about most: a backdoor isn't one player's move, it's two players who both know what the defense just told them. The cutter doesn't hope. The passer doesn't guess.
"Scoring a backdoor play against an overplaying defense is one of the best feelings basketball has to offer." — Dick DeVenzio
The defense always tells you what it's willing to give up. Great players are just listening.
