I wrote ~4000 words on how I built Cartique, diving into the engineering and design challenges behind features like undo-redo management, auto-centering, canvas interactions, and more. deeepsig.me/cartique?v=1

"Hire smart people and get out of their way" is some of the worst management advice in tech. Hire smart people and get in their shit. Build trust. Work through hard problems together. Create alignment.

We should all stop with this modern obsession of having a perfectly balanced, optimised life (8 hours sleep, daily cardio + gym, eat well, deep work, etc.) Most exceptional lives are heavily overallocated somewhere and any pursuit of greatness (in business, art, sport, research) requires big sacrifices. Online gurus love selling this perfect recipe of life but reality is you only have a 24h day. No way you can sleep 8h, do 10k steps, gym, morning sunlight, read, eat perfectly, do 9h of deep work, see friends, maintain a relationship and somehow be happy through all of it. I think a better thing for ambitious people is to think of life in seasons: a year obsessed with work, then a period focused on health, family, travel, etc. You can be massively overallocated to one thing for a while without deciding that’s what your entire life should look like. Balance probably makes more sense measured over years than every single day.
Probably because the people who genuinely “love their work” are usually obsessive enough to sacrifice at least one of the other four. A perfectly balanced life often just means nothing in it is compelling enough to disrupt the schedule. Eight hours of sleep, daily gym, perfect meals. No idea, project or obsession pulling hard enough to ruin the routine. And the people loudly claiming all five online are usually selling you the sixth thing: coaching, supplements, courses, content, etc.

This sentence from Carl Jung hits hard. “No matter how isolated you are and how lonely you feel, if you do your work truly and conscientiously, unknown friends will come and seek you.”

I’ve been building on this thing w/ my internet homies for like 10yrs and I’ve never believed more in building something with the sole purpose of making your life more interesting. Side projects are serendipity machines. Just start shipping things relating to your deepest interests, even if what you put out is a tiny seed of a larger idea, just start moving. It’ll help you find your people. This lil site/app has spawned the fastest growing sun care company in America, we’ve thrown parties all over the world - in a mansion with Ralph Lauren - in the legendary Pikes Hotel in Ibiza - with 1000 ppl poolside at the Standard Miami - and I feel like we haven’t even scratched the surface of what we can do with this thing yet. 10 years in! Still excited! Because I haven’t burnt myself out chasing money with it. People burn themselves out building a business to make money, to buy a more exciting life. But you can also just build a thing that gives you the exciting life, and that can be a side project you spend a couple evenings a month on… We’re launching a new internet club in the next couple wks, I’d love you all to be part of it, make sure you’re on the newsletter! All the love to everyone who has followed along, come to the parties, bumped the radio. + thank you @AppStore!

Major cheat code for life: Become difficult to rush. The world will pressure you to rush into everything. Rushed decisions. Rushed conversations. Rushed relationships. Rushed timelines. There's immense power in rejecting that trend. Slow down. Create space to think clearly.

By VC standards we should either "conquer the world or die in a fire" and neither of these are spiritually compelling for me. I never wanted a company I just wanted a home. At this point we have a large and loyal paid community, we build tons of features for them (I think we did >30 releases this year) and they're pretty happy. We have enough revenue to fund tons of crazy R&D and our models are still the best by the metrics we care about (how the images look and how fun it is to make things). We have a huge backlog of exciting things to make our models way better. Zero risk. We did all this with no investors. Honestly, it feels like we are successful. The next metric of success I think about most about is now that we have "all I ever wanted" in terms of a big well funded R&D lab with cool people free to work on whatever we want... Can we now build something that would make baby David proud? And can we tell bold stories about a human future that people want to be a part of? I think we can.

It's Sunday June 12th, 2016 and the world is mourning the victims of the Pulse nightclub shooting. Trump, who recently clinched the Republican Party nomination, posts on Twitter that Obama should leave office over the shooting. You walk to a nearby cafe thinking about the possible implications of Move 37 (played a few months prior) and how neat the SpaceX reusable rockets are. On the way, a mysterious gentleman pulls a newspaper out of his cloak and hands it to you. It's dated June 12th, 2026. Top Headlines: - Elon Musk Becomes World's First Trillionaire as SpaceX IPO's - Department of War Publishes Third Release of Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena Files - Citing Safety Concerns, Trump Administration Places Anthropic's New 10T Parameter AI Models Under Export Control Huh? Still holding the newspaper, you look up... but the mysterious gentleman has already vanished. You look down... the headlines are also gone. Sipping your coffee, you think to yourself "Wow, these art students sure are are getting stranger and strfr!" Before heading home, you find yourself checking the price of BTC... honestly, $600 per BTC seems pretty high. Maybe it's time to sell??

you have to be a little obsessed and crazy to truly push on craft and design. smaller teams with passionate builders shine here. craft is spending 7 hours on the minuscule polish thing you thought was going to take 30 minutes but you keep going deeper. the thing that is absolutely of trivial necessity that most would think is a waste of time. sane people would compromise and find another solution. crazy people that eschew the standard way of designing and building common interactions, UI, and hardware just to see how it feels, or to tug at an inkling of a vision then do that about 100 more times throughout your product before you're remotely proud of it. it can't be outsourced or handed off to others to implement.
The best software design is not happening at the biggest companies anymore. (credit: @gruber)

When it comes to more visual work, like animations, coding agents don’t quite know what great feels like yet. Here’s my way of fixing it: emilkowal.ski/ui/agents-with…
