Today’s budget looks like being worse for our future and the young than even anything Starmer came up with.
A budget based on approval of mass new oil drilling is a betrayal of our future.
EXCL: The giant Rosebank oilfield can be approved without breaching the UK’s emission targets, according to government insiders, in a boost to those in the cabinet who are pushing for it to be given the go-ahead.
Sources also say the Treasury has already accounted for billions of pounds’ worth of tax revenue from Rosebank and so would be faced with a shortfall should it be rejected.

One fascinating question I scratch the surface of here is how the ability to process and produce language relates to intelligence. LLMs are of course fueling new research on this age-old question.
I wrote about attention, the mathematical operation that enables LLMs to process language at scale. Devised by Dzmitry Bahdanau in 2014, the trick was supercharged in the famous paper "Attention Is All You Need." I ask: 𝘞𝘩𝘺 is it all you need? Is it? quantamagazine.org/is-attent…

@SecKermani telling it as it is in the West Bank
A grim snapshot of Palestinian life in the West Bank - that we witnessed over a week:
- Settlers besieging a family in their own home
- Israeli authorities demolishing Palestinian properties
- Settlers repeatedly attacking farmers, even beating to death more than a dozen lambs
- Israeli soldiers blocking the delivery of water to an isolated community

Quantum mechanics turns probability into geometry. In a Hilbert space, quantum states are represented by vectors, and their inner product gives a probability amplitude. The actual probability is its squared magnitude: P = |⟨φ|ψ⟩|².
David Hilbert’s mathematical framework became essential to quantum mechanics because it lets physicists describe not just possible states, but how likely one state is to be measured as another.

Just received the following message:
Overheard in my new office where we have Sky News on and Sam is doing a package on airports:
‘It would be great if Sam Coates got hit by a plane’
‘Why is he awful?’
‘I don’t know but it would be great tv’
---
Do you agree? Or would you defend me? Watch the package first before you make up your mind: youtube.com/watch?v=8waMNADM…

Warping spacetime into a moving bubble allows apparent superluminal travel.
- The metric is ds² = −dt² + (dx − v_s f(r_s) dt)² + dy² + dz².
- The shaping function f(r_s) = [tanh(σ(r_s + R)) − tanh(σ(r_s − R))] / [2 tanh(σ R)] creates the bubble using shell thickness σ and radius R.
- York time θ = v_s (x_s/r_s) (df(r_s)/dr_s) measures spatial expansion or contraction.
It models hypothetical interstellar warp propulsion in general relativity.

Although this is indeed a spectacular result, that measly log-factor doesn't make much difference in practice: for n=1000, it replaces 2^1000 by 2^380, which is still way more than the number of atoms in our universe, meaning that a universe-sized computer may be unable to solve such a problem even if if we gave it billions of years:

Cells adhering to micro-curved surfaces can exhibit either complete adhesion or partial interior detachment. This is now found to be determined by the balance between the cell contractile stress and the cell–substrate adhesion stress.
