upgrading to iOS 27.2 wasn't easy and came with a lot of trauma for me.
i was upgrading via iTunes on windows.
everything went well, but towards the end, it threw an error and my iphone got stuck in recovery mode.
googled, used chatGPT, watched youtube videos, but nothing worked.
tried a couple of times more to upgrade, but got the same error every time.
finally, iTunes accepted defeat and informed me that my iphone needed to be restored. that meant losing everything: all my pics, videos, passwords, notes.
this was a very traumatic experience. but without thinking much, i accepted my fate and clicked on restore.
finally, i saw the iphone welcome screen. to my surprise, iTunes showed me the option to either set up a new iphone or restore from a backup. i was shocked to see that the backup was from just before the upgrade.
but my happiness didn't last even a minute. the backup was encrypted, and i couldn't remember if i had ever set a password for it.
tried every password i could think of, but eventually gave up.
i started setting up my iphone directly as a new phone, and when it asked me to set up a passcode, i thought, maybe i had used my iphone passcode as the backup encryption password.
and voila! it worked.
it took almost an hour to get my iphone back with all my data and the upgraded iOS.
i lost access to a few apps, but the damage was contained.
learned something new: don't start something without a backup plan. 😊
upgraded my iphone from ios 18 to ios 27.2
freed up above 40GB in system data 🎉
now i can wait another year for upgrade.
