Replying to @paulbristow79
@paulbristow79 thank you for the invite to @UKParliament today to lobby @hmtreasury to remove the 20% vat on children’s school uniform. @conservatives this is a key initiative that needs to be in the spring budget, reducing the cost for parents. @SAschoolwear @branwenjeffreys

Nothing highlights the fiscal failure of this government more starkly than the plight of Poundland. The chain's 600 stores and 12,000 workers sit on the verge of collapse, not because its customers have walked away - Poundland's sales grew by 6.7% in September - but because of this government's unaffordable tax rises, which makes it impossible to run a business that works on slim profit margins to keep its prices down for its customers. How ironic that a government preaching about helping the least well-off is forcing a company out of business that does just that.

Britain doesn’t need to go back to the divisions of Brexit. We need to get on with fixing the problems facing our country: cutting the welfare bill, funding our defence and growing our economy.

Brilliant from Kemi. The reason Andy Burnham has so much spare time to do social media and reality TV is because he’s not dealing with the issues that matter. Cut welfare, cut taxes, increase defence, get a grip. He makes so many mistakes because he’s so out of his depth.

My current choices. 1. A flawed Tory Party with a decent leader but stuck with poor policies on civil rights, housing and planning 2. A Labour Party run by a man whose worldview is essentially Ben Elton c1986: "thach is evil" 3. A racist Green Party led by a self-loathing Jew 4. The possibly corrupt personal vehicle for Nigel Farage 5. Restore, or the BNP reborn 6. Libdemmery consisting of a leader riding hobby horses while shouting "Trump, Musk, EU" over and over again Not a great choice.
Are some people seriously contemplating voting Tory again? Have they lost their minds? Do they not remember the years 2010-2024 - the economic stagnation, the housing crisis, the immigration shambles, the deepening 'wokeification' of our institutions and society, the mad green zealotry, the sacrificing of our energy security? Does all that get forgotten because Kemi Badenoch can turn a decent phrase? The Tories deserve to die a slow death. They should certainly never get anywhere near power again for a good many years.

Absolutely spot on from @afneil. This really is as good as it gets for Andy Burnham, as things are about to get much more painful for the British people. Under Labour, we already have higher inflation, borrowing, debt, unemployment, energy bills and taxes. The country can’t take much more of this. Labour’s incompetence and economic mismanagement have made everything worse. They’re not fit to govern.

Well done @Helen_Whately. I don’t think hard pressed taxpayers who struggle at the end of every month will think it’s okay that their tax is spent on cigarettes and gambling
"Isn't it patronising? To tell people how to spend their own money?" @bbcnickrobinson asks shadow work and pensions secretary Helen Whately, as the Conservatives promise to prevent benefit claimants from spending their welfare payments on alcohol, cigarettes and gambling.

Next budget may well include the dumbest economic policy of all time. The clue is in the name - Capital Gains Tax - means gains on capital that you’ve invested and put at risk. Tax it as if there’s no risk involved and fewer people will invest. Bad for jobs, bad for the economy. Also bad for tax receipts - you only pay CGT when you sell stuff, so people who’ve invested and own stuff already will defer selling stuff until a future govt sees sense and lowers CGT. Utterly stupid sixth-form economics.
