We have received an extremely concerning report that the Sheikh Radwan primary health care centre in northern #Gaza was struck today while parents were bringing their children to the life-saving #polio vaccination in an area where a humanitarian pause was agreed to allow vaccination to proceed. Six people, including four children, were injured.
A @WHO team was at the site just before. This attack, during humanitarian pause, jeopardises the sanctity of health protection for children and may deter parents from bringing their children for vaccination.
These vital humanitarian-area-specific pauses must be absolutely respected. Ceasefire!
Thx to @paimadhu, @CKyobutungi & colleagues for their continued advocacy on this crucial issue. ⏬️

🚨 New findings from the 2024 @LancetCountdown report highlight the growing threat of malaria as #climatechange expands suitable land for transmission. An additional 17.1% of the global land area is now suitable for P. falciparum and 21.8% for P. vivax.

“Empathy is the glue that makes us stand united in humanity. If you don’t act for the Palestinians you will become irrelevant to the world. The only way to comply with international law is imposing sanctions against Israel. May this be the last genocide in human history.”

Today we marked another milestone in Africa’s malaria fight as DRC introduced a @WHO-recommended #malaria vaccine! A total of 15 countries are now offering malaria vaccination, widening access to more comprehensive malaria prevention for young children. @gavi @PMIgov
🇨🇩 DRC has begun the rollout of the WHO-recommended R21 malaria vaccine, becoming the 15th African country to do so. This initial phase targets over 173,000 children.
WHO supported national health authorities in the rollout of the vaccine by providing technical guidance, training health workers, and raising public awareness through outreach efforts.

Yes, malaria mosquitoes also bite in daylight, and bed nets may not be enough for disease prevention

New study shows some 15% of biting by the main malaria mosquitoes in Tanzania happen during the day indoors and outdoors; a significant protection gap in current nocturnal-focused malaria control measures
We investigated the biting patterns of the major malaria mosquitoes Anopheles arabiensis and Anopheles funestus to uncover risks beyond nighttime. While insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) target nocturnal bites, the study found that about 15% of bites occur during the day, coinciding with common activities like chores and playing. Mosquitoes were active both indoors and outdoors at different times. Additionally, malaria parasites were present in both day and night biters. These findings suggest ITNs alone are insufficient, highlighting the need for additional control measures and better community education to reduce malaria transmission effectively. The study was led by Imy colleague Muwonge Mukisa, staff of Uganda' Ministry of Health, who wrote his master thesis with us at @ifakarahealth under the auspices of @pamcafrica ,

Spatial repellents reduces malaria incidence and impacts lives! Thank you Unitaid for believing in us.
In Kenya, the Unitaid-funded AEGIS project is rolling out spatial repellents where malaria rates are high. Early signs point to a breakthrough. Breakthroughs like these are critical in the fight against malaria.
