Great job by @EcoMorphLab member @GahnToSea presenting his historical microplastic body burden work in Galveston Bay fishes, using TAMU collections, to the Galveston Bay Council this am. A great example of solid #scicomm to policy makers.
Sad to hear of Roger Payne’s passing. I once sat next to Roger at a conference & had a nice pre-talk chat with him-it was the first time we met. Such a humble man. I wish I had gotten to know him better. The torch is passed on. apnews.com/article/8f5e73d22…
Nat Geo Vol. 155 (1) 1979. I was 11 yrs old. That issue had a perforated flexi record you could remove & play on a record player. Brilliant for the time & captured my imagination. That’s how I first came to know the name Roger Payne and that people studied whales for a living.
It’s been digitized and can be heard here:

Pinniped whiskers are the largest & most innervated among mammals. Their hair shafts fx as a biomechanical filter; EI stiffness testing shows they are anisotropic. Low EI of beaded whiskers may enhance sensitivity to small changes in flow from prey. journals.plos.org/plosone/ar…
Sea otters ~121 of whiskers. Each whisker has 1340 nerves; that's 161,300 nerves to their entire pad. Their sensory cortex that receives this information is also expanded. Sea otter whiskers may be as sensitive as harbor seals, sea lions and walruses. frontiersin.org/articles/10.…
Wow. I was truly shocked that the @ecomorphlab has been on Twitter this long. Do you remember when you joined Twitter? I do! #MyTwitterAnniversary
So long Austin and #SICB2023. Thanks for returning us to an inspirational week of ideas, creativity, and personal interactions we all have missed and needed.
Happy to be back at #SICB2023 I’m presenting on “Optimal Sea Turtle Habitat” Saturday, 10:30 in Lonestar G. Come check it out. #GCSTR #sharethegulf
I've received news that Dan "Woody" Hartman has passed. His seminal work on FL manatees formed the knowledge-base for a lot of us studying sirenians. There's no replacement for hrs of observation of your study animal. Rest In Peace Woody. The torch is passed on . . .
