Whooping Cranes have one of the wildest conservation success stories. There were less than 30 left in the world at one point, now the population is around 800. I was lucky enough to grow up hearing them and seeing them raise their young near my grandparents home.

🚨 On Monday, Indigenous Peoples' Day, thousands of saguaros the Tohono O'odham consider people will be ripped out of the ground, for not one wall, but two.
The saguaros are called ha:şañ. Removing one isn't just destroying a plant, it's considered an act of violence against a person.
The Nation was only notified Friday.
The Nation filed an emergency injunction with the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals this week trying to stop it. Removing a saguaro without a permit is illegal. DHS is moving forward anyway, citing a border emergency to bypass that requirement.
Chairman Verlon Jose put it plainly: "Trespassing on our land to remove the sacred saguaros is like having masked men break into your house and take away your children.”

My heart is heavy everytime I see people make these arguments because we have clear evidence supporting sentience in MOST animals. We have Birch et al (2021)'s criteria for sentience and we KNOW that we are yet to find an insect that fails one of them!! :(
