The Environmental Management Authorityโs (EMA) Managing Director, Dr. Joth Singh, joined members of Biche and Plum Mitan communities as well as team members from the Global Environmental Facility (GEF)BIOREACH Project team and the Forestry Division on Friday on 16th October, 2026, for a site visit along the banks of the Jagruma and Main Line River in Plum Mitan. There, he observed the progress of ongoing riparian (river bank) restoration works being spearheaded by the EMA under the project.
As part of the visit, Dr. Singh participated in a tree-planting activity, highlighting the importance of restoring riverbank ecosystems, strengthening biodiversity corridors and supporting of livelihoods in our rural communities. โRestoring our natural ecosystems requires sustained action, collaboration and must ensure sustainable livelihoods for persons and their families that depend on these resources.โ said Dr. Singh.
Dr. Singh spent the day with these community conservation champions learning about their involvement in the project, challenges and gaining a better understanding of how the EMA can assist in biodiversity conservation efforts, while also supporting the communities that depend on the areas being restored. He was thoroughly impressed by their efforts and congratulated them on their commitment to the exercise, reaffirming the EMAโs interest in supporting future initiatives in the Nariva Swamp Managed Resource Protected Area, an Environmentally Sensitive Area (ESA).
According to Dr. Singh, โInitiatives such as the GEF BIOREACH Project are important in not only protecting biodiversity but ensuring that the community can continue to generate revenue to support themselves and their families into the future.โ

Meet the UPOPsโa toxic, invisible "family" of pollutants contaminating our air, water, and soil. They might be everywhere, but they are no match for ordinary people making extraordinary choices.โ
Across the globe, everyday heroes are stepping up to break their grip. Here is how you can join the movement and weaken the UPOPs:โ
Start at Home: Reduce your reliance on plastics and chemicals. Segregate your waste, recycle, and switch to natural alternatives.โ
Shift Your Commute: Carpool, use public transport, or embrace electric/hybrid vehicles. Every drop of fuel saved starves pollution at the source!โ
Raise Your Voice: Demand policies that protect our communities. Push for better waste management and clean energy incentives.โ
Unite and Share: Share your sustainable habits with neighbors. A green awakening happens when communities collaborate and thrive together.โ
The battle for clean air, safe water, and healthy soil isn't over. Your daily choices are powerful weapons. Are you ready to take part in the story?โ

Have you ever considered the environmental footprint of your daily commute? One overlooked source of concern is the emission of Unintentional Persistent Organic Pollutants (UPOPs) from vehicles. Cars, trucks, and other forms of transport can release these harmful pollutantsโbut there are practical steps we can take to reduce their impact.โ
โ
Vehicle-Related UPOPs: The Main Sources.โ
Tox (Polychlorinated Dibenzofurans / PCDFs): Emitted from vehicle exhaust, particularly from older or poorly maintained engines.โ
Diox (Polychlorinated Dibenzo-p-dioxins / PCDDs): Released through combustion processes during fuel burning.โ
โ
How We Can Reduce Emissions.โ
Carpooling: Fewer vehicles on the road means fewer emissions overall.โ
Public Transport: Buses, trains, and other shared systems reduce individual emissions and increase efficiency.โ
CNG Vehicles: Compressed Natural Gas options, where available, provide a cleaner alternative to conventional fuel.โ
Electric Vehicles (EVs): With no tailpipe emissions, EVs significantly cut back on pollutants.โ
Hybrid Vehicles: Combining traditional and electric technologies, hybrids help reduce emissions in conditions such as stop-and-go city driving.โ
โ
The Power of Sustainable Choices.โ
Even small adjustments in daily travel habits can make a measurable difference. Choosing cleaner optionsโwhether through shared travel, alternative fuels, or new technologiesโreduces UPOPs, contributes to cleaner air, and safeguards public health.โ
When purchasing or upgrading a vehicle, considering its environmental impact is a long-term investment in both sustainability and cost savings.โ
โ
Driving Change Together.โ
Each decision matters. By carpooling, taking public transport, or transitioning toward cleaner vehicle technologies, we collectively reduce the burden of UPOPs on our environment. Together, we can move toward a cleaner, healthier future.โ
