I want to say something positive, but it's just darkness ahead. The future is as follows: Apple will listen to feedback about touch screen issues. They will earnestly try to fix it, by bloating up the entire macOS to be increasingly touch-friendly. It is year 2032 and we will reminisce about the days when macOS was primarily designed for mouse & click. It's over folks... I am desperately rooting for Apple and I hope they disprove my thesis.
Here are other optimizations for touch on the new MacBook Pro Swipe up for dock like on an iPad New animation for drag & hold in Finder

I understand the hate on the 2026 touchscreen Macbook Pros. The issue with the new touchscreen MacBook Pro is not the touch capability itself. It is Apple removing customer choice. By eliminating a non touchscreen tier, Apple has just pushed baseline prices up across the board. If your daily production setup lives on external monitors, keyboards, and precision trackpads, you are forced to subsidise hardware you will actively avoid smudging.

Speriamo.

I have sold all my Apple stocks. I think Apple is at the point where Nokia and blackberry were before the iPhone. It’s inevitable to me that one of the AI labs will replace traditional operating systems with an AI-based one within the next one or two years.
I’m sorry but this is the most stupid thing apple has ever done. I am the biggest apple fan, but this makes absolutely no sense. Steve Jobs would have fired everyone on the team before this would have happened.

Hey, guys. Steve Jobs said this in 2010. That was 16 years ago. If you're still basing your opinion of laptop touchscreen ergonomics on an opinion formed back when the iPhone 4 hit the shelves, wait until you hear what Netflix, PlayStation 3 and Wii were still doing in 2010.

I keep telling this to every developer I know if you run npm install on your bare macbook in 2026 you are waiting to be pwned you need to develop inside a container one bad vscode extension, one poisoned crate, and every credential on your machine is gone. that's not even paranoia anymore, it's just the baseline apple/container spins up light linux vms on apple silicon so I’ve updated my agent skill remote VMs setup and management to support local ones use /remote-computer, create a local apple container for multi-language development it sizes the VM to your CPU/RAM/disk, sets up key-only SSH on a host-only IP, no published ports, no home dir mount, and ports your git identity and commit signing. also works with AWS and GCP VMs

apple has introduced a new input modality on the mac without demonstrating a compelling new interaction model to pair with it at all or even any meaningful changes to the user interface for touch. that has never ever happened in the history of apple, & that has got to send shivers down the spine of anyone following the company. worse, there is no face id, there is no cellular connectivity, & there is no meaningful new design. what is happening?! i am completely lost.
We’re glowing with excitement over the new MacBook Pro. You’ve gotta touch it to believe it.

Somebody said that Apple is in their Taco Bell era where they're just smashing together random leftover parts from other devices and naming them things like "Phonedito Supreme Crunch" and it's the perfect analogy. Here slap a touch screen on this, charge $4k and call it a Maclupa

This. I don't want Apple to release a single new product before they add a god fucking smart rotation lock to iOS, god dammit.
I’ve been an Apple fanboy for over 20 years. Bought the first iPhone, iPad, iPods, etc. I am thoroughly unimpressed with their most recent products. No interest in a foldable phone, touchscreen Mac, or a slight bump in performance for the iPhone. Steve Jobs knew that specs don’t sell new products. Solving people’s problems does. Between these very bad products and their general lack of AI support it may be time to move on. To what is the question.

It feels like Apple has hit the point where it’s just a giant corporation. No sign of any internal mission to leave the world better than how they found it. Just random products. Gap filing. Not loving this era.

meanwhile you realize that the avg person out there doesnt even know that theres different models, or what an effort level is
> Gemini 4 Carbon, our next model because of course carbon is the next model. Now, when they released Argon, I was like "ah, they'll name them after noble gases" and that seemed reasonable. Helium, Neon, Argon, KRYPTON, Xenon, Radon. All beautiful names, and very intuitive, heavier/scarier is more powerful, Helium is a super cheap classifer. But apparently they didn't want to do that, because google cannot name or brand a product if their lives depended on it. So maybe they're going across the period then, right? Chlorine, Sulfur, Phosphorus... idk, not great, but they'd be in theme at least. NOPE! The new model is named Carbon. What does Carbon have to do with Argon? Fucking nothing, that's what. Because fuck you. None of it matters. It'll be in your google drive plan and you're gonna use it because you don't care, and so google can name it by just throwing a dart at a table because nobody on their marketing team shows up to work. COOL!

every time I think about slack’s architecture this image comes to mind
it is honestly quite baffling to me that openai and anthropic still use slack. i expect this will change within the next six months. they could quite clearly build and maintain internal versions that are *more* secure, robust, and featureful with a team of ~10

it occurred to me that some people genuinely believe that the avg corpo guy actually cares about more than next qs numbers when it comes to "the economy"
just heard someone say "people are more important than the economy" and it occurred to me that some people genuinely believe that others care about the economy because they like numbers going up and not because it drives living standards for the population

I'm starting to sense a divide in the tech industry: - People thriving on autonomy who are reinventing how they work and what tools they use with AI: LOTS of work, but they're enjoying it and getting very efficient - People used to being mentored / trained / or simply told what to do and how. Frustrated with the lack of guidance from management on what to do with AI; also frustrated by seeing some of their peers thriving; increasingly bitter about AI and the state of the industry, as a whole Neither group seems to be aware that there's another group, or have empathy for the other group

It’s sad to see Apple lose its design vision and taste. And I doubt it will ever get them back. The problem is simple. In a company as big as Apple, it’s almost impossible for someone from design to become CEO. We were lucky to see what happens when a company is defined by someone who thinks like a designer, not just a great salesperson, manager, or engineer. So designers - build more. Create more. Start companies. Be CEOs.
