We still don't know what human life IS. What if what comes after is better? And what is "AFTER" if they prove time is only a function of having a body? I have many questions. Dtay alive to get answers? Or maybe it's just life's click bait to keep us from logging off...
When someone tells me we shouldn't extend human life, I want to know which part they object to. Another decade with someone you love? Keeping your independence? Having time to start again?

This would be great to see, personalized with all the people that have been part of an old woman's life. More precious than sad.

Boomer. Went through this with my parents. I'm raising adopted grandchildren, but already put my son/their uncle on all assets & am drawing up and irrevocable trust with him named. I ask his opinion on major expenses b/c it all affects the children. I won't be that person.
I've begged my elderly parents to move in with us. No downsize to a safer house. No. Move closer to us. No. Now Dad's in the hospital, Mom needs a ride home and someone to stay overnight, and I have to work tomorrow and get my kids ready for school. This was entirely preventable. I've offered every reasonable solution, and they've refused them all. Older generations, you cannot insist on doing everything your way and then expect your adult children to rearrange their lives to make it work…

I asked Grok to design this Halloween costume for me. Can you tell what she is?

The only way out is through. They're calling it the Bugpocalypse. LLMs are being used to find long-hidden cracks in the software infrastructure, and it's happening at a furious rate. 3% of all compromises in computing history happened in the last week, claims one source? I believe it. There are people saying public access to the frontier models ought to be locked out, or heavily guardrailed, over this. The problem with that idea can be summed up in one sentence: when lockpicks are outlawed, only outlaws will have lockpicks. The lockpicks will be Chinese open-weight models, if nothing else. There's no way to stop those from becoming ubiquitous. There are two futures in front of us. One in which only the bad guys have lockpicks, and security holes go undiscovered until they're exploited. Another in which everybody has lockpicks and is aggressively red-teaming their own software so it gets fixed before the holes are exploited. The corpus of human code is huge but finite. The number of defects in it has to be finite too. We can fix those defects now; we have a million friendly robots to do it with. The only way out is through.

# Black October For anyone who knows me even somewhat well, it's clear that I am a 99th percentile tech optimist. However, the vibes have shifted for me quite a bit in the last 18 hours, and I feel a moral imperative to share what I'm thinking and feeling with my circles so that everyone can understand, and hopefully take seriously, what's happening right now. I think October 2026 will have many chapters written about it in the history books. You know those scenes in financial movies like Margin Call where someone realizes that they're all fucked, and no one else sees it yet? And that person feels like they're crazy, and then suddenly everyone is pulling an all-nighter in a boardroom and freaking out? Yeah, that's kind of how this is feeling right now in the SF/Bay Area/AI circles. We're 48 hours into what is being called Black October. In the last 2 days there have been several dozen cyber attacks which, in isolation, would each have been the worst to happen in an entire calendar year. Every sector from government to education to big tech and banks is being massively affected, and people are starting to freak out. In a nutshell, what's happened is that frontier AI models have gotten to a point where they are as advanced as the most sophisticated programmers, with one critical difference: they can work 24/7, and you can spin up 10,000 of them with a single command and they'll work together tirelessly until they accomplish their task. The most advanced models today are from companies like Anthropic and OpenAI, whose current best technology is so good that they haven't been able to roll it out to everyone yet because of the national security risks it poses. Meanwhile, the best open source models (where anyone can just download the model weights and do whatever they want with them, uncensored) are slightly behind the frontier but still 90-95% as capable. These models, developed primarily in China, are being used by black hat hackers to wreak havoc on the Western capitalist structure. Presumably, this has been part of China's plan the entire time, and we're seeing its implications fall out in real time. In red-pilled AI circles, we've been sharing and reading papers called things like "Situational Awareness" and "AI 2027" for the last year or so, which at the time felt a bit like near-term speculative fiction. They laid out the case for why Artificial General Intelligence (AI smarter than any human at any knowledge task) and Recursive Self-Improvement (models that are able to use themselves to get better) weren't half-baked future ideas anymore, but instead an inevitable outcome of the linear progress that's happening. These papers would then talk about things like "takeoff scenarios," trying to envision how that moment would come to be and what it would be like when it happened. It would either be a "slow takeoff" that would play out over the course of months and quarters, happening subtly and only obvious to a few. Or, it would be a "fast takeoff" where it would pretty much happen instantly, like a bit flipping from 0 to 1. From everything that I can see and am feeling, we are currently experiencing the fast takeoff scenario. Beyond the crazy security vulnerabilities that have come out recently, there have also been massive breakthroughs in life sciences, fundamental computer science, materials science, and pure mathematics that have all landed in the same time frame. While I still firmly believe that AI will be a net positive for humanity, it's more clear to me than ever that the societal and individual risk is very real, and is playing out NOW. For as much conviction as I have that this is happening, the thing that's caused me to lose sleep is that I don't really know what to do about it, or more importantly, what to tell you, reader, to do about it. So, the best I can do is make a few suggestions that have always been a good idea but are more timely now than ever: Set up 2-factor authentication for everything. I use Duo. Use a password manager across your devices. I use 1Password. Get an identity protection app set up. I use Alta. Move your IoT devices to their own network. Claude helped me do this. And last, but certainly not least, if you've been avoiding leaning into AI, see this as a catalyst to wake up and start using it. Don't just use the chat mode version of ChatGPT/Claude; click that Code/Work button and see how easily you can have AI write code to help you with your job. One of the biggest vulnerabilities was in a massively popular programming language called PHP, and the prompt that set it off was literally, "Find vulnerabilities in php." This is an unprecedented time for humanity, but as we've done with many things before, we will prevail so long as we are kind, loving, and open-minded to the world. Much love.

Pou chèf gang yo ak manm gang yo k ap kenbe kat konpatriyòt nou yo an otaj ann Ayiti: Mesye nou kidnape yo pa konbatan. Nou deja fini ak gang yo nan El Salvador, e nou kapab fini ak nou tou. Nou toujou gen tan pou evite sa. Remèt nou kat konpatriyòt nou yo vivan, san okenn mal, epi tout bagay ap retounen jan sa te ye anvan kidnaping lan. Desizyon an nan men nou.

Guilty on several counts
Dishwasher Manufacturers: If you rinse off your dishes in the sink before loading them into the dishwasher, they come out less clean! This always gets me in trouble. I of course don’t rinse first, because it is a Dishwasher. Right? Rinsing plates before loading the dishwasher feels diligent. Appliance makers say it is the very reason your dishes come out dirty. Engineers at brands like Bosch and Whirlpool, alongside detergent makers like Cascade, have spent years advising consumers to stop pre-rinsing. Contemporary dishwashers rely on internal turbidity sensors—optical eyes that gauge water clarity during the early wash cycle. When pre-rinsed plates yield clean water, the machine misinterprets the load as lightly soiled, shortening cycle time and reducing water temperature. Furthermore, the enzymes in modern powdered and gel detergents require food starches and proteins to latch onto; without debris to activate them, the surfactants simply wash down the drain, occasionally leaving alkaline film etched into glassware. Oh there is more… Cookware care harbors equally stubborn folklore. For decades, home cooks warned that a single drop of liquid soap would ruin a cast-iron skillet's seasoning. Lodge, which has made cast-iron cookware in Tennessee since 1896, explicitly debunks this in its care manuals. The prohibition dates to the nineteenth century, when soaps were formulated with harsh lye (sodium hydroxide), a caustic alkali capable of stripping cured oil. Modern dish detergents contain mild surfactants that lift loose grease without breaking the polymerized oil cross-linked to the iron matrix. A gentle wash with liquid soap leaves true seasoning intact. A similar misconception surrounds kitchen waste disposers. Generations of homeowners were told that tossing eggshells or ice down the drain sharpens the disposal blades. InSinkErator, the inventor and largest maker of food waste disposers, notes that residential disposers do not contain blades at all. The central chamber houses blunt swiveling lugs on a spinning turntable. These lugs do not slice; centrifugal force hurls food against a stationary outer ring of shredder teeth to pulverize it into a slurry. Eggshells cannot sharpen a blunt lug, and their fibrous membrane often snags in plumbing traps. Even oven maintenance suffers from well-intended habits. Appliance makers including GE and Frigidaire warn against lining the floor of an electric or gas oven with aluminum foil. Modern ovens hide the heating element beneath an enamel floor. Foil traps and reflects radiant heat directly against the base, reaching temperatures high enough to melt the aluminum or permanently fuse it to the porcelain finish.
