After spending 25 years feeling terrified of anyone discovering I’m deaf — it’s wild how much Deaf Pride I now feel. Having access to Deaf culture & Deaf role models has been life changing.

Really excellent book by @fi_murphy_ People often say to me they find accommodating my deafness difficult because they can't imagine what it's like being deaf. If this is you, or you know someone who is in this position, I can't recommend this book enough!

The term 'language deprivation' does not get changed to 'language access' just because one does not like it. Language deprivation exists and it's shit. Softening the language is not an excuse to pretend it's not there. Hearing privilege does not supersede deaf lived experience.

‘All of Us’ is a powerful indictment of austerity.  “Humour stops the production from teetering towards sentimentality,” writes Fiona Murphy. “Martinez scatters one-liners throughout and the audience laughs, almost with gasping relief.” satpa.pe/allof915c

Really frustrated by how few Australian arts and literature orgs are using alt texts in images. If you pay people to do your social media, and have a policy on accessibility of your posts and tweets, this should be easy to be across by now. Come the fuck on.

"I’m now proud of how my deafness seeps onto the page... My descriptions of sounds remain exactly how I experience them: warm, sweet, firm, shining, blue." Read @fi_murphy_'s self-portrait in our spring issue of #Openbook magazine here: ow.ly/qQ9Z50LcBT2 📷 Joy Lai

“What is so harmful about seeing what's happened to John Fetterman is that he's actually experiencing what many disabled people experience every day when we ask for accommodations...which is an instant doubt of our competence" - @maria_m_town #AccessIsARight #CripTheVote

The saddest thing I see with #deaf children in the education system is how they’re continuously being expected to adapt and change. “They need to work on…” their reports often say. Audism abound. How about the education system changes to meet the needs of the deaf child? #access

Today concludes Public hearing 27 of the DRC. We must face the reality that First Peoples with disability are being ‘managed’ by police, courts, and prisons, instead of having access to critical community-based services.

When you intentionally stop using ableist terms, you realize how limited your vocabulary is.
