He’s like Yoda .
‘My son had a HS/Legion coach who was EXACTLY Murph. After years of hitting tweaks/chat in the dugout he hit almost .500 his senior season , led the state in RBIs at a few points and ended up a game from State .
Great coaching matters so much in baseball.

“I want to be able to beat you 5 different ways!”
This is the future of player development
Positional Versatility
Hitting Versatility
Pitching Versatility
Can you make a play 5 different ways?
Can you hit a Baseball 5 different ways?

I’ve noticed a pattern in baseball players experiencing shoulder pain.
Many have been instructed to “throw over the top,” regardless of their natural arm slot.
Are we overlooking individual movement variability by prescribing ONE throwing pattern?

If perfect mechanics were enough…
they wouldn’t disappear in games.
So why does a player look great in lessons, but stiff and inconsistent under pressure in the game?
Let’s break it down🧵

Youth baseball has a development problem‼️
Kids master drills… not movement.
So when the game speeds up:
late swings, off-balance throws, stiff defenders.
It’s not a mechanics issue.
It’s a movement skills deficiency.
Build the athlete first.
⚾ Move Better. Play Better.

Junior Caminero said he was being replaced by Caballero late in games because of his defense.
So he asked why.
When he got the answer, he started showing up early to work with the infield coach.
If you’re not playing, don’t blame it on the coach.
Ask. Then get to work.

My JUCO coach used to say:
“If you want an inside pitch, get a hit to the opposite field first. Once you show the pitcher you can handle the outside pitch, sit back and wait for him to come inside.”
Hitting the ball in the air pull side isn’t about forcing an outcome, It’s about understanding how to manipulate the game.
BUNTING MANIPULATES PITCHER APPROACH AND SETS THE TABLE FOR FUTURE MOMENTS
With 2 outs and no body on in the 3rd inning, losing 4-0, @Brewers Manager Pat Murphy told #9 hitter David Hamilton to lay down a bunt in a seemingly unimportant at bat.
Why?
Because Murphy knew Hamilton was known for bunting and they could set the table for a future at bat and big moment later in the game where he’d get a pitch to hit.
And that’s exactly what happened.
Hamilton bunted.
Hamilton got out.
But in the 5th, in Hamilton’s next at bat, he got a pitch in the heart of the plate and singled scoring a run and bringing the Brewers within 1.
And in the 9th, Hamilton did it again, homering on a get me over slider and extending the Brewers lead to 6-4.
You bunt to create future moments, and the Brewers did just that.

One of the biggest issues I’ve seen in player development is that we began over emphasizing training baseball skills (hitting, throwing, fielding) and playing games over developing athletic and movement skills
It’s not one about this OR that
It’s about this AND that
Do both!

The late Ken Ravizza used to say:
“Get the information. Make an adjustment. FLUSH IT!” 🚽
One of the greatest lessons in baseball’s mental game.
Learn from the play. Let go of the emotion. Compete on the NEXT pitch.
What’s your favorite lesson from @KenRavizza1?
Hitters. I challenge you next time you get a bad call at the plate, have a stoic, unresponsive reaction. The benefit of this is immeasurable.
1. It looks mature and polished. Looking like mental toughness.
2. If this stoicism takes hold internally, you're better equipped to complete the at bat with a clear head. Unemotional and calculated.
The mindset becomes, "So what. I only need one anyway." You're no longer a victim, feeling sorry for yourself. You're not bringing baggage to the next pitch. You're defiantly confident.
Be a rock in the box.
If you must respond, ask the umpire respectfully, "Is that as far as it goes to that side?" Or, "Is that the edge?" The umpire will get the message (they know when they miss a pitch a lot of times and appreciate you not showing them up), and respect you for the rest of your days.
But plate presence, aura and confidence build. Teammates, coaches and opponents take notice. You become unshakable. Even if it's strike 3. Shake your head (yes or no, doesn't matter) and move on. It'll do wonders for your game (and life).

The idea that a 9-year-old baseball player is somehow “behind” in their development is WILD
Michael Jordan played youth baseball and was famously left off his high school varsity basketball team
Development isn’t a race

Bryce Harper grew up hitting with a wood bat.
My sons will too
Why?
Because different bats + different balls create different movement problems
Kids have to see it
Move
Adjust
Figure it out
The best hitters aren’t just great swingers
They’re great movers
What’s your go-to?

At 15, I went to a USA Baseball tryout.
They didn’t let me hit
At 17, I dropped out of High School.
At 18, I tried out for a local minor league team.
They didn’t let me hit either
At 19, the Dodgers drafted me.
Your path doesn’t have to make sense to anyone else
Keep going

The idea that nobody was thinking critically about baseball before analytics is ridiculous.
What gets overlooked is the value of DIFFERENT types of players.
Home run hitters.
Contact hitters.
Bunters.
Base stealers.
Versatile hitters.
Each brings something different to the game.
A lineup built around one type of hitter becomes predictable.
Baseball isn’t about making every player the same.
It’s about having different ways to beat your opponent.
VARIETY creates problems.
PREDICTABILITY makes them easier to solve.
That’s baseball.

I heard a Braves hitter used to stand farther away from the machine because he wanted to be able to start early and hold his transition with higher velocity, which in essence creates a different movement strategy than Mookie’s.
Getting closer may create an emergency swing?

Half of your practice time at that age should be “playing catch”. Gotta find ways to make that fun though. Around the World, relays, catcher throwdowns & back picks, pitcher pickoffs to each base.
