FPL managers are busy deciding their squads, so we thought we’d assist them with their squad building.
In the first of a new series in conjunction with @SolioAnalytics, we look at how and why set-piece takers will be important once again in 2026-27.

🗣️ Brilliant from Dougie Critchley on if Bruno Fernandes should win the PFA Premier League POTS award:
“Yeah, absolutely. I mean, I think some people say, Man United have had so few games, they haven't played in Europe, but neither did Kante when he won it in 2017.
“Neither did Mahrez. Neither did Luis Suarez when he won it.
“And, he hasn't, of course, won the league this year. But nine of the last 16 PFA Player of the Years haven't won the league.
“I don't think it's actually imperative. And this guy has created the most chances in the entirety of Europe. And the last player to create more in the premier league season was Kevin de Bruyne in 2019/20 and he didn't win the league that year either. And he was named PFA Player of the Year.
“So, I think exceptional performance is just exceptional performance and he has been brilliant.”

🏴🗣️ Wayne Rooney: "If you brought in a Luis Enrique or Thomas Tuchel and they won 10 of of their first 14 games you would say that's incredible. So, just because Michael Carrick is a young, English manager it means it's not the right place to look in a lot of people's eyes."
"Michael Carrick is a clever person, he's a really good coach, and I think he can lead the team for however long he wants if he gets it right. It will be an interesting summer. For the first time in a long time Manchester United seem like they have a bit of calmness around the whole place and that's a good thing." (BBC)

IMO some managers & tactics have a clarity bias. You will see 100 videos of RDZ or Maresca build up patterns but a handful of good ones explaining Ancelotti or Zidane's Madrid, Ole's United etc. JDP or consistent systems have a comprehension pro over relational or flexible ones.

When you’re comparing Alan to the likes of Jacob Murphy and Emil Krafth, these guys who have won a trophy, I’d be reluctant to talk about Shearer being one of the Newcastle greats, but that’s through no fault of his own

This is the issue with talking about xG or any stat in silos. xG accumulation under Amorim was largely due to high number of shots when chasing games. Our xG/shot taken was low & given was high, indicating low quality chances created & big chances given. Carrick has fixed latter.
Consensus says: Man Utd have thrived since Carrick replaced Amorim
xG (for/against) says: Man Utd have declined since Carrick replaced Amorim

Believe it or not, the Amorim quote declaring we’re NOT EVEN CLOSE to fight for top placeS in the PL came this season when we were 10th following a home loss against 10 men Everton.
Below is the league table since Carrick came in. Actions will always speak louder than words.
Sesko has scored the same number of Non-Penalty league goals as Victor Gyokeres, despite playing 400 less minutes & Gyokeres playing for a much better team.
Watch how Ian Wright defends Viktor Gyokeres compared to how Neville & Keane talk about Sesko.
This is the difference with United pundits compared to the others, constantly looking to drag players down, even in a good moment.
“I DIDN’T say 15, I said between 10 and 12, Why you LYING? He’s done alright.”
Neville & Keane on Sesko:
“In his performances he looks scruffy with the ball.”
Then in fairness to Gary he praises Sesko’s last two goals. Watch how agitated that makes Roy Keane, even the thought of giving a United player credit.

In an alternate universe, the @goodbadftblpod would have gone something like this:
Nicky Butt: "Right, we’ve got to start with the Derby. I’ll hold my hands up.. last week I was worried about the physical mismatch. I made a joke about Haaland picking him up like a toddler, and honestly, looking back, it was lazy. It was pub talk. What we actually saw on Saturday was a masterclass in center-half play."
Paul Scholes: "Yeah, I’m with you, Nick. I said Haaland would throw him in the net, but Licha didn’t even let him get near the goal. I should know better than anyone.. I wasn't the biggest lad on the pitch either. It’s not about how tall you are; it’s about where your head is. His reading of the game is as good as any defender I played with."
Nicky Butt: "Exactly. Look at the stats from the weekend. Haaland was substituted in the 80th minute because he was a non-factor. Licha didn’t try to out-muscle him in the air every time; he stepped in front, he nipped at his ankles, and he used that low center of gravity to win the ground duels. He finished with 100% aerial duels won against Leeds the week before, and he carried that same dominance into the City game."
Paul Scholes: "And it’s the bravery, isn't it? He’s just come back from that knee injury, and he’s playing like he never left. He’s the heart of that dressing room. You saw him after the game, talking about the 'blood and DNA' of United. That’s what we want. We shouldn't be mocking the height of a guy who has won a World Cup and two Copa Américas by being exactly who he is."
Nicky Butt: "He invited us to his house for a chat, and you know what? We should go. Not to argue, but to tell him face-to-face that he’s the standard. He’s the ‘Butcher’ for a reason. He’s the first name on Carrick’s team sheet, and he should have been the first name on ours too. Sorry, Licha. You’re a warrior."
Paul Scholes: "Spot on. I’ll take that tea now, no sugar, because I've already had enough humble pie this morning."

It’s hilarious how the story’s been rewritten. Back then, McKenna and Carrick were just “jobs for the boys” according to the basement dwellers on Twitter.
But now, apparently, they’re the real masterminds who carried Ole the whole time. Funny how that works.

This culture of not being able to enjoy victories unless you win a trophy in this country is miserable. There’s only 3 domestic trophies available to the teams in the PL. Most won’t win. Football is a hobby. If you can’t enjoy moments then what’s the point of this all?

Imagine if Claudio Ranieri never played to the instincts/specialities of that Leicester side, or Nuno wasn’t with this current Forest side. What if Conte didn’t adapt in 16/17? Why does Pep, every single time without fail, divert praise to the quality of his players? The most unique tactic a coach can maximise is a footballer, they are the ones that define the quality & purpose of ‘tactics’.
