For much of the past century, policymakers have treated the Horn of Africa and the Arabian Peninsula as separate strategic regions divided by the Red Sea. That distinction is now evaporating. @alanboswell explains why. foreignaffairs.com/middle-ea…

A milestone in Somalia’s journey from failed state to fragile state to secure, prosperous and well-governed state. A long road. UN men and women from around the world have walked some of the way with Somalis. Thank you for their service & good luck to all Somalis on road ahead
Somalia turns a page as UN political mission concludes after two decades of partnership Mogadishu, 31 October 2026 – The two-year transition of the United Nations political mission in Somalia was completed today, in line with the request of the Federal Government of Somalia, bringing to a close more than three decades of United Nations’ sustained engagement supporting peacebuilding, state-building, governance and reconciliation in the country. The closure of the UN Transitional Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNTMIS) represents the final chapter in a continuum of political support that began with the UN Political Office for Somalia (UNPOS) in 1995, continued through the UN Assistance Mission in Somalia (UNSOM) from 2013, and entered its final transition phase as UNTMIS in 2024. Under the two-year roadmap for the transition, agreed between Somalia and the United Nations, UNTMIS responsibilities were progressively transferred to Somali institutions, UN Agencies, Funds and Programmes, and the United Nations Support Office for Somalia (UNSOS). “Today is not an end to the partnership between the United Nations and Somalia—rather, it marks the conclusion of one chapter and the beginning of another,” said UNTMIS’ Officer-in-Charge, the UN Secretary-General’s Deputy Special Representative for Somalia, Raisedon Zenenga. After the USC captured Mogadishu in 1991, Gen Aidid rejected Siad Barre's invitation for dialogue. What followed was a devastating chapter in Somali history. Millions suffered. #Somalia fractured. Aidid himself would eventually die in the war. What if they had chosen dialogue?

Irony: MoCA (Montreal Cognitive Assessment) was developed in Canada by Lebanese immigrant neurologist Ziad Nasreddine of Lebanon. His Canadian company owns its trademark. An Arab immigrant's scientific contribution became a global medical tool. RFK Jr. & Trump should take note.

EXCLUSIVE 🔥 President Isaias Afwerki blasts AU and OAU as Dysfunctional and Irrelevant ** The African Union does not exist in any meaningful sense, and it will not produce solutions. ** Anyone who expects otherwise is simply ignoring the historical record. ** The OAU was established in the 1960s, after the decolonization process, at a time when aspirations across the continent were very high. People expected a great deal from it, yet it failed to deliver and proved dysfunctional. ** It was later replaced by another continental organization, the African Union. The AU has turned out to be even worse than the OAU. ** No one should wait for solutions from them. Expecting anything useful from these bodies is a complete waste of time. Start Video at 9:29

#UPDATE: Dozens of Somali Troops Reportedly Killed in Al-Shabaab Ambush as Government Says 75 Militants Killed Further details have emerged about Monday's deadly fighting between Somali government forces and Al-Shabaab militants in the #Qardho area of #Bay region, with security and medical sources reporting heavy casualties and significant losses of military equipment. The ambush targeted soldiers from the 64th Battalion, 1st Brigade, 12 April Division, who were travelling towards #Buurhakaba town after departing #Jameeco village. Security sources reported that dozens of government soldiers were killed, with some estimates putting the death toll at 50, although the figures remain independently unverified. The militants reportedly used roadside explosives and vehicle-borne bombs. Claims that explosive-laden drones were also deployed during the assault have not been independently confirmed. Sources said at least four military vehicles, including Turkish-made Kirpi armoured vehicles, were captured, while five other military vehicles and an ambulance were destroyed. Residents reported that the captured vehicles were subsequently targeted in an airstrike near Buurhakaba on Tuesday, reportedly killing approximately 20 fighters. #Somalia's Defence Ministry said government forces killed nearly 75 Al-Shabaab militants and wounded 56 others. The ministry acknowledged damage to military vehicles but did not disclose government casualty figures. Separately, Somalia's National Security Office denied allegations that Turkish F-16 fighter jets or armed drones had mistakenly struck Somali National Army positions in Leego on October 26. The conflicting casualty figures and accounts of the fighting could not be independently verified. Sources: Military sources, medical personnel, eyewitnesses, Somalia’s Ministry of Defence, and the National Security Office.

#UPDATE: Three Civilians Killed, Seven Seriously Injured in Al-Shabaab Mortar Attack in Somalia's Puntland State At least three civilians were killed and seven others seriously wounded after Al-Shabaab militants reportedly fired mortar shells into Galgala, a settlement near Bosaso city in Somalia's northeastern Puntland state, according to multiple sources. The fatalities were identified as Naiimo Ahmed Jama, Ikraan Jama Said and Jama Diib Gurhan. Seven other civilians sustained serious injuries in the attack, raising concerns over renewed militant activity in the area. Hassan Muse, commander of the 44th Unit of Puntland's Darawish Forces stationed in Galgala, confirmed the casualties and provided details of the incident. Galgala, a mountainous area in the Bari region historically affected by militant activity, had experienced a period of relative calm before the latest attack. The incident has renewed concerns about security in the area, where authorities have been conducting military operations against armed militant groups in recent years.
