The closer you are to God, the more conscious you become of your own depravity. Hidden sins, immoral ideals, and thoughts are brought to light. You start to understand how evil the human heart is by nature. That’s biblical. Some give up and embrace it as their identity. Others fight against it. The second is the main goal of a real Christian. I’d say that the closer you are to God, the more you feel like you deserve to burn in hell. The only hope I have is that I recognize this, and that Jesus took what I deserve. He is my advocate in the trial. By myself, I’m done. I think the real issue is when you don’t recognize it. That’s when evil is rooted in your identity and it feels like virtue. And this is when a person thinks he doesn’t need God and is safe and saved. That’s the most pleasing path to hell.
