I can only imagine what we would be facing today if we had allowed commercial business or even gone into anything that could have remotely resembled profiting from the group. You are a better person than I am always.
The audacity to hate on someone for trying to make life more comfortable and encouraging others to priorities their productivity and comfort. All while choosing to study abroad. At least be consistent. The Nigerian education system was here when you made that (rational) choice. How many people hated you for doing something that just made sense..Or does that mean you sold out on bad state of education in Nigeria? I live and work in Nigeria. I contribute to the economy, from STEM education to financial technology, I pay my taxes, and have actively advocated and protested for a better Nigeria. I am here, doing my part to make this country better. This is particularly disappointing coming from you, Rinu. I genuinely thought you were above the performative outrage merchants who ride waves of public discontent to build personal relevance. Nigeria doesn't even rank among the world's top 50 solar energy users. Yet, many of the countries dominating that list have some of the most stable electricity grids in the world. People there still choose energy independence for convenience, resilience and productivity. Do you hate them too? Perhaps the problem isn't really about concern for Nigerians. Perhaps outrage has simply become another tool for performing concern and harvesting public anger for personal relevance. I have been consistent about this since 2016. I know how many people I have helped transition to solar, how many businesses I have advised at absolutely no cost, the number of free installations I have facilitated, and the countless hours of free consultations I have given. Hate me all you want. I will continue to advocate for renewable energy as a practical alternative to an unreliable grid, while equally pushing for and supporting efforts towards a better national electricity grid..

I just ran some data to back up this post. I have so far generated 3.7 million Naira worth of electricity from solar this year. That is 16 Megawatt hours of electricity. I asked Claude to calculate how much it would cost me doing the same with diesel and it was 12 M Naira if the diesel generator was running 10 hours per day on average. I did not include the cost savings in gas for cooking and baking - and I bake my own bread - The crazy thing is - the system has so much excess capacity that by noon a lot of excess solar goes to waste. This is why getting an electric car to use that excess solar would further save cost on petrol. 100% energy independence is good. Don't let anyone gaslite you.
Pull the trigger and get a competent solar install. You are already doing between 15m to 32m a year at the rate of your spend on diesel generator. 15m is the price of a decent sedan. At that price you have a tech that generates electricity from the sun and gives you a comfortable life. You only live once bro.. your well-being, your productivity matters a lot. I did spend considerably on my system but.. I have not a single regret. I am completely energy independent. When light was good in my Band A my system saves me between 350k to 500k a month on electricity bills. Now the power is unreliable so bad that everyone is complaining my neighbors runs his Diesel gen almost 247 but my system is always on. I have 5 AC, 3 water heater. I bake my own bread using excess solar at noon. All my cooking is done using induction. My lawn mower is electric. Water pump, pressure pump all run on solar. The system allows me to establish a base of comfort that allows me to focus and be productive (as a remote worker) I can wake up at midnight and head to my home office to get some work done in climate controlled room. I wrote some smart into my system that allows it to use weather information to decide when to take from grid during rainy season and when grid is down and heavy storms is predicted disable heavy non essential like pressure pump electric oven and cooker and water heater. Over the past year the system had only had to triggered once.. all through July to now I have been completely off grid. I am getting an EV and excess solar would now be used for charging it. Yes my system is not for everyone not everyone can afford it, but even I started small, very very small 10 years ago with a small setup to carry basic needs. That setup grew to what I have today. There is a protest planned for today around Lugbe Abuja to pressure govt to fix power unfortunately I am not around to participate I will continue to push for a better grid in Nigeria but I will never blink at using technology to solve my electricity problems.

I don't argue on Twitter, I don't want more followers, I am not monetized, I don't sell anything, And I don't want anything. Together with @supersanusi @bigbrovar @netotse and a couple of friends we started an 8000 plus solar and DIY group. If you can afford it? Get solar.

Ceiling fans are totally underated in this parts. They are most efficient way to manage heat and compliment AC very well. The problem is most ceiling fan in Nigeria suck. They are mostly inefficient with some pulling over 70 - 100w to run. Then there is the design factor. Most are ... Just fugly. For my space I ordered these ceiling fan for all the rooms in my space. They use efficient DC motor running at about 20w and they match my space pretty well as you can see. – at Ikeja, Nigeria

This is my hack. Best way to enjoy AC is with ceiling fan.

Again, most of what I will have to say on twitter has been said.
So, this is a really niche opinion, but I think the grid in Nigeria, as presently designed and priced, is done. All the people who can pay are leaving the grid. Source: Trust Me Bro 2024.

I know popular handles have told you, you can't go off-grid. Skill/Wisdom Issue. 😀 Here is my solar Generation for 2025. Almost 0, Grid use. My house is Zoned Band A. I saved ₦983,753 in 2025. I travelled for about 6 months in the year and still used 4694 kWh. Grace 2 U

This week's side project: a Claude button inside the reMarkable Paper Pro notebook. Ported a reMarkable 2 plugin to the Paper Pro's 64-bit chip and bigger screen, built it on GitHub Actions, deployed from PowerShell. First tap tonight. It works. github.com/Gbenrotto/remarka…

Niche Milestone Tweet- 25+ years in IT, and my first open-source PR just got merged. 🎉 24 Defender Antivirus checks in @merill's @maester365 failed for any tenant that splits settings across several Intune policies. Now they judge the policies as a whole. Officially a contributor.
