This is the research we need more of. Diffuse sunlight and altered temperatures would affect pollinators and plant growth in ways climate models miss. Assessing ecosystem risks before any #SAI deployment is the only sensible path.

Record purchases is great until you ask how many tonnes were actually delivered vs just contracted. Buying is the easy part, MRV is where the market finds out if it's real.

Although ultramafic rocks offer substantial potential for permanent CO₂ mineralisation, the reasons for the contrasting reactivity of calcium- and magnesium-bearing olivine have remained unclear. Atomic-scale calculations reveal that the difference depends on how these cations influence oxygen reactivity, with nonbridging oxygen atoms supplying the oxygen involved in surface reactions with CO₂. In calcium-bearing olivine, these reactions lower the Ca²⁺ dissolution energy barrier by 60% and accelerate ion release by six orders of magnitude. The calculated dissolution rates also reproduce experimental observations of complete calcium-olivine conversion within hours under 1 atm CO₂. This multiscale framework clarifies how surface reactions control silicate carbonation and offers a predictive basis for modelling and engineering CO₂ mineralisation in synthetic materials and basaltic reservoirs. nature.com/articles/s41467-0…

For those who wonder, again no mention of aerosols (except for twice in the glossary..) in the new 112 page full report.
And another beautiful @UN @UNEP Climate report completely failing to cover aerosols... Speaking of broken records. 'Limiting overshoot Navigating exceedance of 1.5°C and pathways towards return' Reducing air pollution increases warming, especially regionally!

Forests are most valuable when we leave them standing - storing carbon, supporting biodiversity and sustaining resilient ecosystems - not when they are burned in biomass energy facilities🌳 Keep forests standing. Keep carbon stored. #BigBadBiomass

ReflectOrbital is planning to launch a 18×18 \,m mirror in space at a ∼ 600\,km altitude to illuminate a 2.5 \,km radius circular patch on Earth. The pilot satellite, called EARENDIL-1, is a pathfinder for a constellation of ∼ 50,000 larger mirrors, each with 54×54 \,m in diameter, with the explicit goal to provide space-borne illumination on Earth. We calculate the sky brightness caused by the Rayleigh scattering and aerosol scattering of the incoming beam from one such satellite and by the light reflected back by the illuminated patch, for various atmospheric properties and ground albedos under cloud-free conditions. We demonstrate that the light pollution caused by one of these satellites is very significant, altering the nighttime environment up to distances of ∼ 30\,kms. The results show that for an observer within the beam of a single 54\,m satellite, the mirror will appear as a −16.7 \,mag point-like source, i.e.~about 4 magnitudes brighter than the full moon. The diffuse sky background will be similar to the dusk sky shortly after sunset; too bright to see even the brightest stars. From a distance of 14\,km, the glow from a single mirror will exceed the luminance of the full moon sky for majority of the sky. From a distance of 34\,km the sky will still appear brighter than the moon-lit sky in the direction of the beam. If 400 such mirrors illuminate the same patch simultaneously, the glow will be obvious from 80\,kms. Video 📹Don Davis vimeo.com/1237489863

Ecosystem responses remain a major knowledge gap in assessing the risks of stratospheric aerosol injection (#SAI). By altering sunlight as well as temperature, SAI could expose species and ecosystems to novel climatic and radiative conditions, with consequences that existing research has yet to establish coherently across different environments. A new paper argues that climate modelling and atmospheric research that exclude ecological science risk providing an incomplete picture of SAI’s overall benefits and harms. It identifies key ecological questions for investigation and explains how existing observational data, experiments and climate-response models could be adapted to assess potential impacts. The authors also outline practical considerations for designing research programmes that integrate ecological knowledge into SAI research, helping scientists and decision-makers better evaluate ecosystem risks before any potential deployment. essopenarchive.org/doi/abs/1…

📃Carbon Removal Research Papers from the Past Week (12-18 Oct 2026)📃 Details with links: carbonremovalupdates.substac… Highlights: 🔹 Tropical cyclones under CDR | Han-Kyoung Kim et al. CO₂ drawdown caused regional shifts in cyclone formation potential despite no significant basin-wide hysteresis. 🔹 Bankable CDR | Julian Henry Smart, Niall Mac Dowell Cost reductions alone did not ensure project financeability. Offtake contracts improved BECCS bankability, while DAC remained difficult to finance. 🔹 Ocean iron fertilisation | Lennart Bach Larger experiments may not resolve uncertainties in C export, nutrient redistribution & deep-ocean oxygen loss. 🔹 Net-zero aviation | Katrin Sievert et al. DACCS had 49–69% lower median abatement costs than synthetic fuels when non-CO₂ effects were included. Combining removal with flight rerouting cut costs further. 🔹 Delayed corporate CDR | Tuvshinjargal Otgonbayar, Marco Mazzotti Starting CDR earlier reduced peak warming and long-term ocean heating more effectively than delaying removal. 🔹 Straw versus biochar for soil C | Xiaolong Bai et al. Both amendments increased soil C & reduced salinity, but straw supported microbial C cycling while biochar improved C retention. 🔹 Ocean C uptake constraints | Jens Terhaar et al. Observational constraints increased estimated ocean C uptake capacity by 4-5% & reduced uncertainty by 35-47%. 🔹 Moisture-activated DAC materials | Tsu-Chieh Yu et al. Metal pyrazolate polymers captured 7.4–9.2 mmol CO₂/g & could be regenerated for reuse. 🔹 Global CDR supply curves | Catrin Harris et al. Five models projected annual CDR capacity of 2.6-9.7 GtCO₂ by 2050 at $400/t, with higher prices supporting more diverse portfolios. 🔹 Marine snow & ocean C storage | Bryce Inman et al. More viscous marine snow degraded more slowly & sank farther, potentially increasing deep-ocean C storage. 🔹 Forest regeneration & C storage | Yunkun Song et al. Artificially promoted natural regeneration increased aboveground C accumulation by 12.1% over 10yrs compared with natural regeneration. 🔹 CDR & climate planetary boundaries | Dominik Keiner et al. Modelling suggests limiting warming to 1.0°C rather than 1.5°C could require less than 5% more primary energy & ~0.25% of global GDP in additional costs. 🔹 Lime-looping efficiency for DAC | Shaheen Akhtar et al. Fine lime particles achieved higher carbonation than coarse particles, while mineral impurities reduced performance. 🔹 Grassland diversity & C storage | Stephen Wirth et al. Plant functional diversity helped maintain grassland productivity & soil C under climate change. 🔹 Low-emissions cement production | Riccardo Cremona et al. Hybrid oxy-fuel and solvent capture could exceed 99% CO₂ capture & achieve net-negative emissions of 181.9 kgCO₂ per tonne of clinker with alternative fuels. 🔗 For links & full details, visit: carbonremovalupdates.substac…

Public acceptance of a proposed climate fee on food consumption to finance carbon removal depends on how its costs and revenues are distributed. This commentary examines Moberg, Lyngfelt and Fridahl’s proposal, noting that higher household expenses and a modestly disproportionate burden on low-income groups could weaken public support. However, earmarking revenue for a dedicated fund outside the state budget may improve acceptance and reduce the risk of funds being diverted during periods of fiscal pressure. A clear, measurable connection between payments and carbon removal could also strengthen perceptions of effectiveness. The commentary considers whether the fund should support carbon removal exclusively or finance broader climate measures, alongside the fee’s relationship with the EU’s forthcoming new Emissions Trading System. These design choices could influence both the policy’s public legitimacy and its long-term effectiveness. journals.sagepub.com/doi/ful…
