Cdn Govt might want to consider comprehensive plans to build a sustainable economy, stop urban sprawl, protect: farmland, natures land & waters habitat, build 100% waste mgmt systems, reduce consumption, modify the financial system to support the move. No real plan, no action

What happens when the rich keep getting richer—and the elites themselves begin fighting for power? Complexity scientist @Peter_Turchin warns that a “wealth pump” is siphoning wealth from the working class to a small elite, while a growing number of elites compete for a limited number of positions of power. In his book End Times, Turchin draws on centuries of history to show how these forces can tear societies apart—and what we can do to reverse course. The next time someone tells you that markets are rational remember that in 2026 pretty much every company simultaneously announced that they were going to borrow a quadrillion dollars to build 420 data centers in six months with chips they didn’t have powered by electricity they couldn’t get from turbines that weren’t built sent through transmission lines that didn’t exist and everybody was like “Cool, cool. Sounds good. Solid plan.”

Esso listed two former refinery lots in Montréal-Est totaling about 13 M sq ft in 2022. Both were still contaminated with hydrocarbons at the time. Esso's listing site described the lots suited to data centers, large distribution centers and other industrial uses. On June 30th 2026, the Québec governement announced a $123M budget to buy and clean up 7 M sq ft of that land to get it ready for new economical purposes. Hydro-Québec lists 100 MW of remaining capacity in its Montréal-Est zone at the moment (12/2025), one of the 5 zones at 100 MW or more around the province. It also plans to replace equipment at the Montréal-Est substation to get it ready for what's coming to the sector in the next decades. Cleanup of the former Esso land could take 5 to 10 years depending on the section. In June 2026, Québec cited cleantech, energy transition, AI, aerospace and defence as examples of target sectors.

The US National Debt has now increased by over $1.1 trillion since July 1st. The Federal Government is borrowing from our future to spend money like drunken sailors today. Everything they said about "cutting spending" and "balancing the budget" was a lie.

China subsidized its chemical industry less over the past 10 years than the US subsidized the Iran war YTD and less than the EU subsidized the Ukraine war over the same 10 years. Western policymakers have chosen very poorly regarding what they have decided to subsidize. 🤷‍♂️
Enormous exports from China into Europe now -- chemical trade by weight

Only 15% of capital flowing from major financial institutions goes toward business investment. Where does the other 85% go? Citing research by economists Moritz Schularick and Alan Taylor from 2014, Financial Times editor @RanaForoohar explains how Wall Street increasingly trades existing assets instead of financing the real economy. When capitalism stops working for younger people then…. The wealth gap between old and young Americans has widened sharply. In the 2025 Fed SCF, the median 75+ household is worth 15× those under 35. In 2001 it was roughly 13× (inflation-adjusted), and in the late 1980s closer to 9×. …young people opt out of the system.

Courtyard urbanism basically tries to restore the kind of dense, fine-grained neighborhoods that were destroyed by 20c. "urban renewal" projects. (and even to surpass the pre-war American neighborhoods which lacked both the density, green space, and commercial integration of 5-6 story mixed-use perimeter blocks)
I’ve been posting more on LinkedIn and am starting to get the “this is just urban renewal again” comments. And I realized I don’t get those as often on here anymore. Two years ago, the analogies to Pruitt Igoe were NON STOP. And I would respond with a juxtaposition of Pruitt Igoe and courtyard blocks and explain difference between a public housing project and a fine-grained city block. And I feel like we’ve made a lot of progress!

Sweet. It's a 1 megawatt nuclear microreactor that fits in a shipping container. Gas-cooled, first by helium, then air. Runs for five years, then you ship it back to the factory, where they take care of the spent fuel and refuel it.
BREAKING: For the first time in American history, the Department of Energy has approved a commercial nuclear microreactor's safety analysis for full-power operations. LA-based Radiant secured the approval, with testing planned at Idaho National Laboratory.

The immigration issue is not so much an #Immigration issue, but more a #population issue. Rapidly growing your population can only ever be a short term band-aid to hide fundamental economic weakness via "GDP growth" .. a band-aid which comes with heavy social & ecological costs

This is such a bleak story about what it's like to try to land a job right now. nytimes.com/interactive/2026…

consolidated corridor courtyard block versus fine-grained courtyard block: consolidated corridor courtyard -single building, new entrances, single owner, many renters -uncanny valley facade tries to make the single building look like many buildings -massive garage signals total car dependence -deep floorplate means hotel-like floor plan with many small units strung along looooong hallways fine-grained courtyard block: -one block, many different buildings, many entrances, many different owners -facade changes actually correspond with different entrances and tax IDs -where's the parking? some street, some garage, but you don't notice it because many households don't have cars BECAUSE THEY DON'T NEED THEM -thin floorplate means HOUSE-LIKE apartments with 2-3 homes per landing, a stair connecting apartment to street and courtyard, many apartments with a FRONT on the public street and a BACK on the courtyard
Replying to @B_Barbarian
:) there’s a courtyard, it’s just not urban. This is courtyard suburbanism

Brazil can add farmland bigger than the entire United Kingdom without cutting a single tree in the Amazon. The land is already cleared. It sits under old cattle pasture worn out by heavy grazing and years without fertilizer. Embrapa, Brazil's farm research agency, mapped 28 million hectares of this tired pasture on land rated good or very good for crops. The count leaves out Indigenous lands and protected areas. Conab expects Brazil to plant 85.4 million hectares of grain this season. Turning that worn-out grass into crop fields would grow the country's planted area by about one third. Mato Grosso holds 5.1 million hectares of it, more than any other state. Nearly 9 in 10 of these pasture areas sit within 20 kilometers of a highway. The federal government has a program to recover and convert up to 40 million hectares of weak pasture over ten years. Brazil's next great farm frontier has already been cleared, mapped and connected to the road.
