On November 5, 1775, General George Washington criticized his colonial troops for celebrating Pope's Night, an anti-Catholic gathering held every November 5 in England and the American colonies in which effigies of the pope were burned.
Washington called it a "ridiculous and childish custom" that offended French & Irish troops in the colonial army, and harmed relations with Canada, a potential ally in the American Revolution.
"Instead of offering the most remote insult, it is our duty to address public thanks to these our Brethren embarked in the same cause."

It’s Friday & we could all do with some light entertainment as we get ready for the weekend.
Aiken aka “Submarine Steve” makes a complaint against the fantastic Sinn Féin MLA Maolíosa McHugh, saying that “he hadn’t declared an interest.”
The standards commissioner investigated the complaint and did NOT uphold Aiken's allegation against Maolíosa.
However, Maolíosa filed a counter-complaint against Aiken for publicly disclosing the live investigation, which subsequently led to Aiken being found in breach of the Assembly's code of conduct and suspended for two days !! 😂🤣😂
