All the younger folks talking about the Star Wars prequels like they weren't hot garbage is making me wonder how many crappy things I like simply because I was exposed to them as a child. I mean, nothing, obviously, but hypothetically

Okay, let's see what Malfoid is up to today! *Checks Internet* Chinese Stock Market Crash. Major real estate crashes. Bolsanaro fleeing Brazil. Japan and several other nations tell citizens to have 3 days of emergency supplies on hand. General expectation of major crashes and turmoil to come. *gulp*

I want it
This is an acoustic guitar. It sounds like a medieval hurdy-gurdy. Japanese inventor Keizo Ishibashi made a crank attachment that spins two rosined rings to bow four strings at once. No electronics. Nothing modifying the guitar. Genius or too strange to catch on?

I can't speak for every American, but yes, I mean it, and I bet most people in Utah do when they say it.
Can I ask Americans something that has always confused me? Let’s say you tell a friend, “Let me know if you need anything.” As a Japanese person, I might hesitate to ask for anything because I don’t want to be a burden. But what if someone actually takes you up on that offer? Like… asking you to help them move, drive them to the airport, or help them every single week. Would you think, “Of course! I told you to ask.” Or would you secretly be thinking, “Okay, I didn’t mean THAT much.” Because in Japan, we sometimes say things out of politeness without expecting the other person to take us literally. So I genuinely want to know: When an American says “Let me know if you need anything,” do you really mean it?

Utah keeps electing Republicans, but the problems they want solved keep getting worse. They pay exorbitant taxes — among the highest in any “red state” — for neighborhoods where it’s impossible to raise a family, schools that psychologically abuse children, a justice system that plays catch-and-release with violent criminals, libraries full of leftist trash, parks that are unsafe for their children to play in. And when they appeal to their Republican leaders for relief, they’re told that doing anything to stem the tide of dysfunction would be contrary to the Constitution and “Utah Values”. That’s why we started Constitutional Action, to recruit leaders who will treat the Constitution as a mandate for action, rather than an excuse for inaction. Ben Wilson and I believe that Utahns are ready for something better. — but as long as the median Utah voter gets their news from KSL, the Salt Lake Tribune, the Deseret News, and the Daily Herald, we will never reach them. So now we’ve created Constitutional Action News. We want Utahns to know what is really going on in their state, and to catch the vision that they do not have to live like this. There is nothing inevitable about Utah falling into the same dysfunction as California, Minnesota, or Colorado: it is a decision being made over and over again, every day, by weak and cowardly political leaders wearing GOP lapel pins. This weekly show will focus on Utah issues as we build momentum here — but these stories will be relevant no matter where you live, because what is happening in Utah is happening everywhere. We are facing a national crisis, and it will require a national movement. In this first episode, we explain how the project began, our plans to field candidates in Utah, and why outrage has become such a dependable business model for the conservative movement.

For anyone curious about what it actually looked like to kill a generation of functioning cars, here’s an actual video from 2009 and brief explanation: The dealer first replaces the oil with sodium silicate solution. It’s a clear-ish liquid that crystallizes under extreme heat. As the engine warms up the solution begins to form small abrasive crystals in the oil system that shred the bearing and score the cylinder walls. Within seconds of starting the car you can see smoke billowing from the exhaust, this is the crystals scratching the cylinder walls and leaving small grooves for oil and solution to leak past into the combustion chamber and ignite/evaporate, producing the white smoke. Pretty soon the entire crankcase is full of crystals and freshly shredded metal flakes, the engine seizes. It took about 40 seconds in this video. Some engines reportedly lasted up to 7 minutes, but all were destroyed. That strikes me as sort of sad in a way, like watching a great warrior slowly lose a heroic last stand. Now, this is the part that gets insanely wasteful. These cars were sent to federally approved recycling facilities where they had 180 days to sell the non-engine parts before they were required to prove that they had shred the entire thing into scrap steel. But, in talking to a guy who ran one such facility at the time, he typically just sent them straight to the crusher. The timeframes allotted weren’t long enough to dismantle all of the cars, and even if you could, the marginal prices of the parts was greatly diminished. You cannot sell 1000 transmissions when only 50 went bad that year, they became worthless. So just like that, in order to increase prosperity and save the environment, 677,000 entire running cars and trucks were turned directly into rebar worth a few cents per pound. The entire Obama administration was like a chapter out of atlas shrugged.
Barack Obama was horrible in a million different ways, but he doesn’t get anywhere near the hate he deserves for destroying the used car market for an entire generation. 15-year-old cars with 150,000 miles that should be selling for $3,000 are going for $15,000. It’s abominable. Pure destruction and thievery.
