BREAKING
The Treasury’s entrepreneurship adviser has announced she is quitting.
Alex Depledge tells my colleague @hannahprevett start-ups are treated as a “sideshow” and a “nice to have”.
“Entrepreneurship can’t be seen as a good news bonus on the margins of economic policy. That mentality is really dangerous for British business as a whole…”
Depledge due to leave her role on Thursday, the day after the Budget.

"Refute" does not mean "dispute" or "deny." It means that you've provided evidence that proves the claim to be incorrect. I recognize the English language to be a living, evolving thing—but dammit, I will die on this hill.

Good example of why the core AI trust issue isn’t about malice so much as unreliability.
Replying to @GaryMarcus @sama
Disabling only helps if you check it really stopped. On our test trading system, the AI's status notes said an engine was stopped; its own log showed it started on 25 more days and kept placing orders. Our rule now: 'off' gets checked in the run log, not the notes.
Recent narrowing of Wigmore St by a pavement flange explained: it's for a bus stop, just to make sure all traffic must stop when a bus does, thus proving how evil private transport is. What is wrong with these people?

Sad news. RIP Ian Dickson, legendary freelance photographer across all music genres, and regular contributor to Sounds in its heyday.

HMG: Depend on us for all things; stop that inefficient redundancy and independency of state-controlled and monitored systems.
Also HMG: We want you to be resilient when the state-controlled systems break.

Source? I wouldn't put it past them. But is it true? Can anyone point me to a UK press report of this, widely circulating, story?

The organs of the expansive state now expect to make all policy and law for all things. They know best. Why would politicans and public resist being guided to the right answers here too.

I may have took Councillor Burnham’s suggestion more seriously if I hadn’t been text alerted last year about BBQ sausages.

Well that answers my raised eyebrow here:

'We'll tax our way to prosperity'
John Healey will launch a tax raid on retiring business owners to fund fresh incentives for entrepreneurs to grow in Britain.
The Telegraph understands that a £1bn tax break mainly used by owners who sell their businesses, known as Business Asset Disposal Relief (BADR), will be significantly scaled back in next week’s Budget.

On this day—October 23, 1942
An SS Einsatzkommando unit was waiting in Athens for the order to bring the Holocaust to Mandate Palestine’s Jews when British forces under Montgomery opened the Second Battle of El Alamein.
By the summer of 1942, Erwin Rommel’s Afrika Korps had driven deep into Egypt. British forces held a defensive line at El Alamein, 60 miles west of Alexandria. From there, the road to the Suez Canal and to Mandate Palestine with nearly 600,000 Jews was open. Another 75,000 lived in Egypt, and both communities understood the danger. Reports of mass killings of Jews in Europe had already reached them.
In Berlin, an Einsatzkommando under Walther Rauff was assembled and positioned in Athens. Its orders were to carry out “special operations” against the Jewish population once Axis forces advanced beyond Egypt. Local Arabs in Mandate Palestine, anticipating a German arrival, marked Jewish houses for seizure. Grandi Mufti Amin al-Husseini had already met with Hitler and sought Arab units to fight alongside German forces against the Jews and the British.
On the night of October 23, Montgomery’s Eighth Army launched a massive artillery barrage and infantry assault. Over the following days, the Axis lines broke. Rommel’s forces began a long retreat to the west. The Einsatzkommando never deployed to Mandate Palestine, but it later operated in Tunisia.
The battle is usually remembered as a turning point in the North African campaign. For the Jews of Mandate Palestine and Egypt, it was the point at which a planned extension of the Holocaust was halted.
