When a non-expert writes a history of the Middle East. The very first page of Simon Sebag Montefiore, “The Cauldron: the Making Of The Modern Middle East”. First, nobody refers to Mutanabbi as “a Syrian poet”. He is the classical Arab poet. Secondly, this is a bad translation of his famous line of poetry. Not knowing Arabic, he could not tell. It should have been: “The horses, the night, and the desert know me well; The sword, the spear, the parchment, and the pen.”

Given how much people resist even modest food system reforms like the proposed foie gras ban in DC, it can be tempting to moderate our ambitions about this issue. I think this is a mistake. In my view, we should pressure the international community to set a goal of banning industrial animal agriculture by 2050. Industrial animal agriculture causes massive and unnecessary harm to animal welfare, public health, and the environment. It has no place in modern civilization, and there are ample legal instruments and precedents for coordinating internationally around a global transition over the next quarter century. verfassungsblog.de/global-ba…

Vegans are right about everything. We really have no collective moral conscience when it comes to animal suffering. Shameful
foie gras is delicious and should be apolitical. DC used to be fun and its been subjected to killjoys for too long. Eat foie gras, be fabulous, enjoy life

American conservatives are constantly bemoaning the decline of aesthetic standards and calling for a return to classical Roman architecture, but are now forced to defend the Cheesecake Factory. A constant tension between the Brooks Brothers patrician and the Kid Rock populist.

I am voting yes on I-86 to end the force-feeding of ducks. The practice is needlessly cruel and has been banned in more than 20 countries, including most of Europe and Brazil. To dispel some misinformation that's going around: there are no foie gras farms in DC so no

Wild. The biggest veterinary compounding pharmacy in the country is recalling almost 4,000 medications (incl. our cat’s medicine) because they mixed them incorrectly. The recalled prescriptions date back to February of this year and the pharmacy does not pick up when you call

I think it’s kinda the government’s business to regulate animal cruelty
They shouldn’t ban foie gras because foie gras is delicious and it’s not the government’s business to tell people what to eat.

Jordan isn't a lawyer and evidently cannot parse legal text. His stated concern about overbreadth -- that this initiative would ban the sale of basically all fowl in DC -- is misplaced and downstream of his professional limitations.
Guys, this foie gras ban is so sloppily written that it would ban Jewish delis from selling chopped chicken liver. Absolutely vote no on this shit.

The DC foie gras thing is fascinating, because I know most liberals support animal cruelty with their daily actions, but it is illuminating to hear them support it with their words for once
