It’s so exasperating to hear Tony Blair declaring that “far-left” politics will destroy Labour, it prompted me to check how the party had done since his day. I know the only metric that really matters in the end is whether an election was won or lost, but it’s still revealing. /1

"Q. How democratic is the Israeli vote – and who is being disenfranchised? A: About 15 million people live in areas under Israeli control. Just over 7 million Jewish Israelis and 1.7 million Palestinian citizens of Israel live within the country’s pre-1967 borders, known as the “green line”, and have full voting rights. In the occupied West Bank, more than 500,000 Israeli settlers can vote. They live among 3.1 million Palestinians who are subject to military rule and do not have the right to vote. In occupied East Jerusalem more than 230,000 Israelis with voting rights live among 350,000 Palestinians who cannot vote. Two million Palestinians in Gaza, who live under Israeli military occupation, according to the international court of justice, also have no vote." theguardian.com/world/2026/o…

Don't forget that Palestinians in Jerusalem aren't even allowed to vote in Palestinian elections, and israeli authorities smash up the polling stations, because they reject the precedent as a threat to the principle of jewish democracy. A fundamentally irredeemable project.

This this this!
That story about Google killing hundreds of thousands of trees in Finland for its data center project is such a perfect microcosm of what capitalism is doing to our world. Recent mass media headlines are saying the tech giant "illegally" cut down "250,000" trees, but both claims paint an inaccurate picture of what actually happened. Google killed 400,000 trees (250,000 near a town called Muhos and another 150,000 near the village of Otanmäki), and unless the company's executives actually wind up going to prison for this, their actions cannot properly be described as "illegal". I don't know who first coined the saying "If the penalty is a fine, then it's legal for rich people," but it certainly applies here. The Finnish Licensing and Supervision Authority has reportedly ordered Google to suspend all “measures that significantly change the environment," saying it will "consider enforcement proceedings and fines" if the megacorporation does not comply. Google's parent company Alphabet has a net worth of around four trillion dollars. Whatever paltry penalties Finland might impose for these ecocidal actions, it won't have any meaningful effect on Google. Giant corporations do this shit all the time. They calculate that the fines incurred by their abusive actions will be dwarfed by the massive profits they generate, issue fake apologies as needed, and leave it to their armies of lawyers to minimize the damage. That's why the Sackler family is still worth billions despite all the fines Purdue Pharma was slapped with while creating the US opiate epidemic. A 2017 Harvard study titled “The Opioid Epidemic: Fixing a Broken Pharmaceutical Market" contains the following paragraph: "Although civil claims and criminal charges were brought against Purdue and its executives, the resulting penalties paled in comparison to extended-release oxycodone profits. In May 2007, the company and its president, chief counsel, and former chief medical officer pled guilty to falsely marketing extended-release oxycodone as 'less addictive, less subject to abuse and diversion, and less likely to cause tolerance and withdrawal than other pain medications.' As part of the plea bargain, Purdue agreed to pay the federal government $600 million and 27 states $20 million. The three executives agreed to $34.5 million in fines but avoided jailtime. By contrast, Purdue has earned an estimated $31 billion in total revenues from extended-release oxycodone since its launch. Rather than deterring fraudulent marketing, the penalties simply became a cost of doing business." A cost of doing business. That's how things work under capitalism. The law primarily exists not to protect people or the environment, but to protect the interests of capital. If you destroyed a Google data center you'd probably be charged as a terrorist and spend decades in prison, but Google can destroy the natural world around you and get off with a finger wag and a symbolic fine. If you stole millions of dollars from your employer you'd go to prison for grand larceny, but if your employer steals millions from its employees you need to win a class action lawsuit to get back what they stole from you. Proponents of capitalism often pretend they support minimal government intervention in civilian affairs, but their entire model is at all times propped up by state power using force to protect the haves from the have-nots at every level of our society. Corporations are free to destroy the environment, destroy your health, rob you, exploit you, and manipulate your government to their advantage, and if you ever take action to stand up to this world-devouring onslaught, the state will lock you in a cage. In school we are taught that that the law exists to protect ordinary people from bad people, but that's not true at all. Under capitalism, the law exists to protect the very worst among us from everyone else. That's why we are seeing our planet being turned into dust and ashes for no reason other than shareholder profit. It's an insane system, and it needs to end. These freaks are feeding our entire biosphere into the woodchipper.

Watch this. Lubna Speitan, author of the Greens4Palestine motion “Zionism is racism”, spells out the central obscenity of our age – the grotesque inversion whereby the victims of ethnic cleansing, Apartheid and genocide must constantly fend off accusations from their tormentors that it is they who are the racists. “We as Palestinians are being silenced and gaslit and vilified [as we] witness the annihilation, the cold-blooded murder of our families, of our people… our children burnt with phosphorus, having to endure amputations with no anaesthetic, having their limbs torn and shredded, their bodies burnt by phosphorus, being starved to death … And to have to sit here … and try to bury my feelings so I can eloquently and diplomatically shield my anger, my rage, my anguish that every Palestinian is feeling, is an insult.” /1

Displaced from Beit Hanoun by Israel’s genocide on Gaza, Nahal Huwayhi has turned discarded aid-packaging ropes into a source of income for her family. Working from her tent, she transforms the ropes into laundry baskets, children’s beds, simple storage units, plant-growing containers, and household organisers. Beyond helping her survive the harsh conditions of displacement, her handmade crafts have become a means of preserving her dignity and supporting her children. Huwayhi hopes to expand her initiative into a small business that can provide a stable income for her family and create job opportunities for others.

Gaza this morning as Israel continues blocking food and water for a seventh consecutive day
These scenes come back in the Gaza Strip: families lined up with empty pots in front of kitchens and kitchens, waiting for food to run out before everyone gets it. Many leave empty hands, and their children at home wait to eat and get one meal. The World Food Programme has reduced daily hot meals from 250,000 to 150,000 due to lack of funding. At the same time, the occupation's restrictions on commercial aid and trucks have worsened, leaving families with fewer options to survive. We can't let empty pots become the image that everyone is going through again. To contribute and donate: { chuffed.org/project/ahmed-ha… }

On 30 October, dockworkers across Europe will take action against the transport of weapons and troops destined for war zones, while demanding better wages, safer conditions, and protections against automation. We're proud to have Greek dockers' leader Giorgos Gogos joining us on our International Anti-War speaker tour in Birmingham tomorrow and London on Friday.

If it keeps going at this rate, we might, for (I think) the first time in history, be about to witness the first continent-wide youth revolt in Europe - a "European spring" of sorts. The sheer number of countries where it's **already** happening is pretty overwhelming. I count 8, including 4 with violent clashes: - France, famously - Albania (see below) with daily clashes in Tirana and a government building set alight - Belgium: the French movement spilled over, including riots in Liège - Italy: "No Meloni Day" student protests since 16 October, turning into riots in Milan, Turin and Bologna - Greece: students camping in Athens' Syntagma Square over housing and education costs, explicitly inspired by France - Germany: pupils blockading schools in Berlin and Hamburg in solidarity with France - Spain: an indefinite education strike in Madrid, with students marching alongside teachers and families - Serbia: the student movement born from the 2024 Novi Sad station collapse is now running its own list in the 25 October election And, by the way, the fact it's also happening in countries with close to no immigration - like Albania - goes to show how reductive it is to label these movements, like JD Vance and Trump did with France, as the fruit of "the migrants hav[ing] taken over." As is often the case, it's much more a story of "it's the economy, stupid." As such, Trump with his war on Iran, has ironically done much more to fuel this (pun intended) than any migrant.
BREAKING: Albania right now, anti-government protests have erupted into violence.

That's straightforwardly wrong. How are you even a news reporter? The report mentions Israel 60 times. It refers to Palestine/Palestinian 35 times. It mentions Zionism (or Zionist) 11 times. It argues for the adoption of the IHRA Definition that includes numerous examples related to Israel. It says, explicitly, that anti-Zionism is antisemitic. It says, outrageously, that Muslims disproportionately hold antisemitic views. It says 45% of British people are antisemitic because they believe that Israel rates Palestinians like Nazis treated Jews. I'd say this report has almost nothing to do with antisemitism at all - it is almost entirely about Israel. Entirely. It's two key recommendations are to encourage all schools to adopt the IHRA Working Definition of Antisemitism, which is plainly discriminatory towards people holding anti-Zionist beliefs; and for Prevent to be more actively engaged in helping schools deal with antisemitic incidents. It is an inflammatory, quite disgraceful report, that, if implemented, will create severe crises in schools across the country and lead to the systematic persecution and harassment of children and teachers expressing anti-Zionist views - including anti-Zionist Jewish students and teachers.
