This is why I’ve argued that understanding the medieval and early modern history of Eastern Europe is essential for contemporary geopolitics - because if Europe doesn’t have a deep historical narrative about its eastern flank, the Kremlin will provide one: shows.acast.com/historyrage/…
I once again repost an essay I wrote last year on the importance of political mythology in the Russian imaginary. Putin and his advisers are obsessed with history and ideology — it is the constructivist framework through which they operate. It is not the framework through which we operate. providencemag.com/2025/03/wh…

What a class act. Pietas, respect and honour.
Harry Kane’s words to his family, One of the most beautiful #BallonDor speeches ever: 🤍 All those years, the sacrifice, taking me to training, coming to watch me play all around England... There was never any pressure to become a footballer. It was always about working hard.

This is likely an appalling reflection on my own ignorance but I’d no idea who Mbappé was until this Mao kerfuffle kicked off.

Catholicism is one of the most racially diverse institutions in the world and this guy was surprised?
Attended my local Church here and the priest was Indian, there were female altar servers, Protestant music and the majority of the parishioners were migrants. I left Mass in a state of deep anger and will probably never go back to that parish ever again. I despise all of it.

The 40 million plus deaths, through man-made famine or slaughter, are just a statistical blip in the utilitarian calculation.
Under “dictator” Mao, life expectancy in China increased by 30 years, literacy rates went from 20% to 70%, steel output grew from 1 million to 23 million tons, 47 million hectares of land was taken from landlords and given to peasants, and China was unified under a strong central state and got nuclear weapons. Despite his failures, it does not take a rocket scientist to understand why Mao is revered in China.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Mao's Great Leap Forward and related policies caused an estimated 30-45 million famine deaths in 1959-1961 alone, with total excess deaths under his rule often estimated at 40 million or higher. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Chi… pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC43… chinafile.com/library/nyrb-c…

This keeps on happening. It's a shame that, aside from Orban's Hungary and sometimes France, no western country shows much interest in the persecution of Christians across the wider Middle East. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/cm4g…

Thee, thou and thy are the intimate register for the second person singular, family and close friends. They are the closest to the heart.
You should address the Almighty in the highest register of your language.

I’ve been saying this for years! Of course in Ireland with our 50% insured population, most of the NHS wannabe civil servants and Slainte-worshipping pols have insurance themselves! The system we should emulate Is Germany.!
Among international experts on healthcare, the UK's system is viewed as being mediocre at best. It is highly centralised, giving patients little or no choice and therefore does not incorporate a competitive/incentivising dynamic. That Ireland's Slaintecare apes the NHS has long been a cause for concern. Sam McBrides's view from Northern Ireland, where the NHS operates

God have mercy on the Ethiopian Christians - as the country looks set to descend into war again, they are suffering.
Ethiopia: At least 47 Ethiopian Christians were killed, and another 18 hospitalized, in coordinated attacks targeting them in the Oromia region. Surviving witnesses claimed regional authorities collaborated with Islamist militias to carry out the massacre. Church leaders have repeatedly warned local authorities about armed groups entering the area, but received no serious response. This is not an isolated incident, but rather part of a pattern of targeted attacks against Ethiopian Christians, who militants conflate with Amhara ethnicity. This fusion of religious and ethnic violence against innocent Christians and their churches must not be tolerated. We condemn these evil acts and call for the protection of Ethiopia’s Christians.

I have never been more seized by alarm at civilisational decline.
Catholic drinking in America has plunged to a record low — just 55% of Catholic adults now report consuming alcohol, down from 79% two decades ago, according to a new Gallup report. Protestant drinking rates, by contrast, held flat at 54% over the same period. The collapse in Catholic consumption is one of the sharpest declines tracked across any religious subgroup, though researchers caution the shift may reflect broader health trends rather than anything unique to Catholic culture. Every county council will vote on its 2027 budget in the next few weeks. In August I asked the Department to release 14 years of those budgets in excel format. They did. Here's what it shows about how central government funds local authorities and where Galway County sits. Data: data.gov.ie/dataset/local-au… (1/11)

We’ve had several ‘giveaway budgets’ - lots of little bits to everyone in the audience, with no overall strategic objectives beyond trying to pacify various groups, taxpayers included. Without vision, the people perish …
Support for Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael has plummeted to a record low as voters desert the coalition in growing numbers despite its giveaway budget, according to the latest Business Post/Red C poll. businesspost.ie/politics/exc…

This is quite a weird thing to say. Christians are compelled to pray for those in authority. The oddity from my perspective is how rarely I hear prayers in Ireland for our Head of State or Government.
That the Anglican service of Evensong still asks God to save the King is absurd.
