Do oesophageal temperature probes actually make left atrial ablation safer and are we still using them?
That’s the question behind the new EHRA Scientific Initiatives Committee survey on the contemporary use of oesophageal temperature probes (ETPs) during left atrial ablation and the subject of our latest #EHRA_SICsays conversation with @AriSultanEP.
232 physicians from 37 countries responded and the picture is far from uniform. ETPs are used predominantly during thermal ablation, while their use with pulsed field ablation is uncommon. Even when probes are used, temperature thresholds and the response to temperature excursions vary considerably between centres.
The key issue isn’t simply whether we monitor temperature. It’s what that monitoring actually achieves. Current randomized and observational evidence has not established that ETPs prevent oesophageal injury or atrio-oesophageal fistula, and 56% cited lack of evidence for AEF prevention as a reason for not using them. Meanwhile, the growing use of PFA is reshaping oesophageal protection strategies altogether.

For patients with prior CABG but no MI, the cardiovascular benefits of evolocumab hold up in a VESALIUS-CV analysis. The findings should encourage surgeons to take a more active role in lipid management after patients leave the OR. bit.ly/4s76uip
Leave one flow-limiting vessel untreated, and the risk of cardiovascular death or MI more than doubles — and it’s still doubled seven years later.
900 patients with new-onset stable angina, revascularisation judged by FFR-CT: 16.2% vs 7.8%.

ALT This image features a medical study infographic. It shows a 3D heart diagram highlighting a narrowed artery. Bullet points detail the study: 927 patients with 231 coronary lesions over 2419 days. A pie chart shows FFR<0.80 in 500 cases. Early revascularization and complete revascularization bars use varying colors to represent outcomes (Normal FFR, CR-FFR, IR-FFR). A line graph plots cardiovascular death or myocardial infarction over time, with three colored lines for comparison—red for CR-FFR, blue for Normal FFR, and teal for IR-FFR. A table lists median FFR values.

AI-generated high spatial- and temporal-resolution 4D-CT of mitral valve dynamics
Can artificial intelligence transform structural heart imaging? This report demonstrates how AI-enhanced 4D cardiac CT can generate high spatial- and temporal-resolution images of mitral valve dynamics, providing detailed anatomical and functional assessment that may improve procedural planning and deepen our understanding of complex valvular disease. A glimpse into the future of cardiovascular imaging.
