She lives in a rented apartment with her husband, their four children, and her mother, making a household of seven. The family pays $300 a month in rent but has accumulated three months of rent debt after her father, who had been helping cover the rent, was martyred in February. Her husband is unable to work, and the family has been displaced seven times since the genocide began after their home was destroyed. They now rely on donations to cover rent, food, clean water, cooking gas or firewood, clothing, and other daily needs. Their youngest child is an infant who needs diapers and formula, while one of her sons has ongoing breathing problems and is believed to need surgery for a deviated septum, which the family cannot afford. None of her children have been able to attend school for the past three years because of the siege. Umm Ahmad says that moving around to buy basic supplies remains dangerous, as they continue to witness attacks, injuries, and deaths around them, leaving the family living in constant fear while struggling to meet their basic needs.
