My take on #COP27. I highlight the need to focus on local governance issues even as we push the global north to do more. In particular I discuss @WWFPak work viz the "Climate Crises Charter." @AdilNajam @Daanibhai @atsheikh @afiasalam @zofeen28 thenews.com.pk/tns/detail/10…

Pakistan's Supreme Court has acquitted the 3 remaining men convicted for the burning alive of a Christian couple in Kot Radha Kishan, Punjab. I remember covering the atrocity in 2014. We visited the village, spoke to eye-witnesses. No one expected the couple will get justice.

⚖️ A noteworthy development for environmental jurisprudence in #Pakistan. Justice Jawad Hassan of the Lahore High Court, Rawalpindi Bench, has issued an important order in the River Soan case in light of the findings of my environmental assessment report of #RiverSawan highlighting concerns related to floodplain degradation, ecological integrity, river restoration & environmental stewardship. The message is clear: development cannot come at the cost of rivers. 👉Report can be accessed here drive.google.com/drive/folde… 👉Order is attachd & can also be accessed here drive.google.com/file/d/10wY… #RiverSoan #EnvironmentalJustice #ClimateResilience #EnvironmentalGovernance #Pakistan

Doesn’t bode well for ROL if govt itself not mindful of transparency & due process. Given also the historic official disregard for history & heritage & penchant for gaudy decoration & bias for private interests. #EwingHall should not be a victim of such unholy caprices @FCCollege

Deeply disturbed by the news coming from across the LoC. The killing of more than a dozen protesting civilians and police personnel is extremely sad. The Government there should know better than to use force to handle public grievance and demands in this manner. When people take to the streets to express their concerns, it is a signal that they seek to be heard. It is the responsibility of those in authority to listen, engage and peacefully resolve the matter, rather than allow it to escalate into violence, arbitrary arrests and loss of life. Hope and pray that better sense prevails and the matter is handled with maturity while addressing the concerns of the people.

For a brief time I was researching how historic bazars can be remodeled while preserving architecture, history etc. Standard 'pedestrianize, lay bricks, choona over shop front' ideas were under discussion. I was told by a field archeologist who had researched Pindi extensively..

Demolish it and turn it into a public park. Give the space back to the tax payers. Open up the Constitution Avenue to the public. Remove the barricades. Enough of this comprador elite structure and its beneficiaries.
Replying to @Huk06
There is not a bigger security threat than Margalla hills. Not only one but a whole army of snipers can attack from there. These hills should be destroyed as soon as possible. Or at least all the trees should be cut.

One Constitution Avenue is a reflection of poor governance, corruption, elitism and comprador elite structure in Pakistan. Where was the law when it went up? It is reflection of where we have gone wrong and continue to go wrong. Forgive me, Sir, if I don't shed a tear.
Lazy critics who neither read nor understand the facts falsely equate the Constitution Avenue matter with Katchi Abadis. I reject this nonsense outright. First, I do not support demolishing Katchi Abadis. I have signed—and will continue signing—petitions demanding due process and a well-planned, humane resolution. Citizens deserve fairness, not bulldozers. Second, the Katchi Abadi issue has a clear, win-win solution: redevelop these areas with high-rise mixed-use buildings. Grant residents legal flats in the new developments in exchange for their current holdings, and provide them a fair share in commercial spaces. This approach upgrades living standards, unlocks economic value, and benefits everyone—residents, the city, and the economy. It is practical, just, and forward-looking. One Constitution Avenue, however, is entirely different. It is strictly a matter of applying the law. Our babus and judges wrongly believe citizens have no rights. They seize on any clause, twist any rule, and trample property rights at will. This is not governance—it is arbitrary power. We must defend the rule of law on Constitution Avenue while delivering smart, inclusive redevelopment for Katchi Abadis. Both can and must be achieved without compromising justice or progress. Enough with the false equivalences and weak excuses. Demand better.

Elites of Islamabad quietly cheered the brutal demolition of poor neighbourhoods — all perfectly 'legal', they said. But the moment the same law touches One Constitution Avenue skyscraper, it turns bearable. Law for the poor. Exception for the elite.

If you want to quickly understand the economic and geopolitical imperatives behind UAE's departure from OPEC, please watch a short episode of our podcast. We also discuss the implications of this important development.
In this episode of Geopolitical GupShup, @OtherImranKhan & @khansheharyar analyze the strategic implications of the UAE’s potential exit from OPEC. They explore how this shift could redefine regional energy dynamics, impact global oil prices, and signal a broader change in the UAE’s independent economic foreign policy. check the latest episode on the link below: youtu.be/MqdSOEsQRlg

The HIV epidemic in Pakistan is at a critical juncture with relatively large numbers of newly infected cases being reported daily from different parts of the country. The new cases are increasingly from the general population, although the country’s disease is labelled as concentrated in high risk groups ie injection drug users, transgenders, men-having-sex-with-men and female sex workers. The most unfortunate part is that children are getting infected in large numbers, which is unique when compared with other countries and is largely due to too many and unsafe injections through reuse of disposable syringes and transfusion of largely unscreened blood. UNAIDS and WHO have declared our HIV epidemic as fastest growing epidemic in Asia Pacific. Surveillance of this disease is not being done properly and we don’t know the prevalence of this disease in our high risk groups and in general population. The last National Integrated Biological and Behavioral Surveillance (IBBS) was conducted ten years ago in 2016. The latest round of IBBS that was carried out in the country at the cost of USD 3.5 million is fraught with controversies that are not being resolved for the last 3 years. For evidence based planning and effective future response latest surveillance data is urgently needed.

WWF-Pakistan expresses serious concern regarding ongoing and proposed development activities in areas adjoining Margalla Hills National Park, particularly within ecologically sensitive foothill zones. These activities raise significant risks for one of Islamabad’s most important ecological landscapes, including habitat fragmentation, disruption of wildlife movement corridors, and long-term degradation of ecosystem services. Given the ecological sensitivity of the Margalla Hills, WWF-Pakistan urges that all development activities follow strict environmental safeguards, transparent assessment processes, and science-based planning.
