🆕 Robert Young lived in the end zone at Roy High
But the distance between touchdowns, figuratively, was not much different than the physical distance he traveled do it, eventually at Weber State
How Young made himself a role for @weberstatefb ⤵️

And I was like. “Uhhh it’s on the radio… listen to what the announcer is saying.” But she just couldn’t and it was strange to me. But if I ONLY grew up with visual as my medium for learning ANYTHING I can imagine that a radio broadcast would be difficult to comprehend.
We were driving home from a competition in Logan a few weeks ago and I was listening to the Weber State game on the radio and she couldn’t grasp the concept of listening to a game on the radio and every time I’d react to something on the game she would ask what was happening.
We were actually thinking about challenging younger guys to listen to the radio broadcasts for big games and not watch on TV so they could force themselves to learn the skill of consuming information that way. Some of the idea also comes from my youngest daughter…
I was talking to a coworker about training guys in their 20’s & we were talking about their ability to visualize things and role play things in your mind and we came to the conclusion that learning to visualize sports from the picture painted on a radio broadcast is a lost skill.
I guess I want to add an addendum to this. The radio. Learning to consume sports on the radio is a lost art and is something I’m so glad I learned. Radio has a special place in my family b/c my grandpa was a broadcaster in Ogden with his own show for 50 years.
So all that is to say that it was 36 years between seasons like this for me in my fanhood. So whatever happens this season… just enjoy the ride. Enjoy the commentary. Enjoy being in the national title conversation. Then enjoy your heart being broken because that’s beautiful too.
That season made me a BYU fan for life. It’s fun seeing this same thing happen this year with BYU at number 2 in October. 1990 was the last time they were ranked so high so early. There’s a personal euphoria around all college football when week to week when it plays out this way
… of course then Hawaii happened and I learned the best lesson as a sports fan, which was enjoy the big moments then and there because you just don’t know what happens and you as a fan actually have no control over any of it… so just enjoy the ride.
Id go over to his house once a week early in the week to pull up Prodigy and see where BYU was ranked each week. They beat Miami and got up to number 4, then lost to Oregon and dipped to 11, then won a bunch of games and got to 4 again and Detmer won the Heisman. It was so fun!
