Last night, I delivered my maiden speech @RBKC. I spoke about how the council’s new Community Safety Plan must tackle the inequality that drives the higher crime rates in North Kensington. A fairer borough is one in which residents feel safe in all parts.

Something as important as a defibrillator should never be refused planning permission.
You are paying for this.  Plans to install a new defibrillator, public WiFi, and an emergency phone were refused. Why? Because of ‘visual clutter’. The chance of survival goes down by up to 10% every minute without a defibrillator. This is what happens when we have a system that prioritises what we can’t do, rather than what we can do.  We can’t build houses. We can’t build trains. We can’t build roads.  It’s time to change the system to focus on doing. What would you change?

Here we have Louis Walsh, a well-known Irish figure, advising young musicians on the subject of Israel/Palestine to ‘shut your mouth…because you don’t know what religion the boss of the record company is. If he doesn’t like you, it’s over.’ Louis did not say ‘the political views of the boss of the record company’. He said the religion. The fact that the response to this by the interviewer is just ‘wow’, as opposed to pushing back against this, says it all. While not representative of the Irish people as a whole, antisemitism is completely normalised in the Irish public sphere. This is the air we breathe and the water we drink at this point. There is no going back.
🗣️"He should have been the first, you know.” Louis Walsh criticises Bono for not speaking out sooner on Gaza, while offering some surprising advice to young musicians about getting political. 📺 Catch up on 'The Big Interview: Louis Walsh' now on Virgin Media PLAY.

I'm delighted to have been appointed as the Advisor for the National Cancer Plan! I'll be highlighting where delivery is off track and further intervention may be needed and assessing whether the Plan is delivering improvements in quality of life and patient experience.

I’m proud to ‘Wear it Pink’ and support Breast Cancer Now this Breast Cancer Awareness Month. 💗 As the former minister who wrote the National Cancer Plan earlier this year, and as a metastatic breast cancer patient, this campaign is really important to me. (1/3)

Some chatter on social media would have you believe that crime is out of control. The facts tell a different story. As @frasernelson has shown in his Substack today: Violence is at its lowest level since the crime survey began in 1981. Robbery is at a record low. Crime, excluding fraud, is 78% down on its peak in 1995. And the stats show this Government is delivering on its promises too: Knife crime is down 11%. Knife murders are at their lowest level in 35 years. Thefts including phone snatching have fallen by 20% in the last year alone. But I know there is more that we must do, and we will: We’ve put more than 3,800 extra neighbourhood officers into roles, with named, contactable officers for every neighbourhood. We’re introducing the most significant reforms to policing in a generation. We are tackling rising rates of violence against women and girls through our landmark strategy. And we are tackling crimes like fraud, more prevalent in our increasingly online world, with £250 million directed to this challenge in our Fraud Strategy published this year.

Pensioner poverty has halved in the past 30 years, as the shadow work and pensions secretary @Helen_Whately claimed. But how much of this was down to the Conservatives? Almost all the fall she’s talking about happened under Labour. fullfact.org/economy/helen-w…

Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley has responded to the unacceptable online abuse directed at a Met officer who received an award at yesterday's annual Police Federation Conference. PC Fiona Shaik Umar was recognised for the outstanding contribution she has made for women in policing.

The vast majority of criticism was not because she is Muslim, but because she was not following very basic gun safety rules. A certain Rachel asked Nobel laureate Paul Krugman a question at Oxford last night, casually noting the IMF’s praise for UK deficit and debt reduction and the productivity puzzle being revised away. All during her time as Chancellor, as it happens. Laughter and applause.

Rachel Reeves suffered misogyny and calls of being the worst chancellor from the public and well know ‘economists’. Yet she consistently placed Britain on the surest path to success. She was excellent and should still be in post.
“The UK is actually one country where action to reduce debt and deficit has been taken decisively and we see the UK in that sense enjoying a bit of a better growth prospect”. IMF MD Kristalina Georgieva just again singled out UK for its plans to reduce annual borrowing, amid more general warnings that advanced economies should “get house in order”, after the forecast figures released yesterday. Also said growth is not enough for US to reduce rising borrowing…

The thing is... Keir and Rachel DID fix the foundations. On growth, NHS, immigration, poverty, public services - they reversed the momentum, turned us around, and now we are moving in the right direction. Hard yards need hard decisions and they did that
Fastest rate of UK economic growth for almost four years at 2.1% YoY and a sprightly 0.7% QoQ to the end of August. Construction still firmly in the doldrums (-1.8% YoY) but services, manufacturing, investment & trade all showing decent Q3 momentum.
