Some personal news!
After a ~4 year diversion in big tech, I’m back to the manga industry! I’m going to be leading UX & product management for VIZ’s digital platforms (SJ app, VIZ Manga app, & web)—I’m so excited to work on making manga as accessible & user-friendly as possible!
Since the iPhone Duo doesn’t perfectly match manga aspect ratios (ie, black bars), I’ve been seeing debate about whether Z Fold8 matches better— so here’s the data:
Manga (magazine): 1.38:1
Manga (tanko): 1.34:1
Duo: 1.41:1
Z Fold8: 1.35:1
Z Fold7: 1.11:1
iPad: 1.33:1 or 1.50:1
Kinda depressing seeing Apple and large creators talk about comics on the iPhone Duo like Webtoon is the only comics app they’ve heard of — especially since webtoons are designed & drawn specifically for tall screens, whereas manga is perfect on a wider device like the duo
one thing that stands out having recently replayed the original: this new clawshot certainly looks like something that wouldn’t work under water 🤔
(and it wouldn’t be that crazy to rework the water temple a bit so that underwater hookshotting only works post-upgrade)
Fun fact: the iPhone Duo’s “passport” aspect ratio (1:1.4 folded, 1.4:1 unfolded) almost perfectly matches the standard manga aspect ratio

not one single person has displayed the only valid iphone duo use case: the shonen jump app.
it’s hilarious seeing people try to diagnose this recent wave of anti-piracy japanese vs pro-piracy westerner discourse as purely cultural, as if piracy discourse even in the west hasn’t always been primarily fueled by “I like pancakes” “so you HATE WAFFLES??” type disconnects

lowkey why do so many japanese worship corporations a lot like theyre so ready to fight you if you mention about piracy, pirated goods, bootlegs, 3rd party stuff etc
it got to a point where ive seen someone argue about pirating a japanese game that isnt in stores anymore and a japanese guy scolded him and said that if it isnt in store anymore he will simply not play the game LIKE WHAT???
The depressing reality is that nearly every pro-piracy person in the western world would probably flip their views about the ethics of piracy (and their absolute moral conviction that it has zero harm) if piracy were a serious threat to YouTubers or TikTokers

TCG players love talking about shuffling randomness. We made this thing for fun but it helps you visualize the randomness created during your shuffle. You can input your EXACT shuffle and see how it turns out. Link in the comment or just check bio

istg I can’t be the only one who feels like the look and feel of the remake version appears to be much more at home in the vibe of the forest temple than a bunch of platforms spinning around a random glowy lava(?) pit
(and that the spinning just added tedium, not complexity)

people understand how most of those other forms of entertainment getting cheaper and more accessible directly contributed to those industries collapsing, right?
many many cases of a healthy, sustainable economic model being gutted by a VC-driven race to the bottom
this shonen jump store thing sounds cool
