Nithya Raman really is running to be the Zohran Mamdani of L.A.
Someone who is pretty far left, but also technocratic, results-focused, and intent on dismantling the city's machine politics. And also aggressively pro-housing.
If she wins, I wonder what other big cities could see candidates with this brand of politics pop up.

I think the fundamental YIMBY insight is that, if you live in a society which imposes artificial scarcity on basic necessities like housing and health care, then there is no amount of redistribution which will make them broadly available to the poor. You need supply-side changes.

NEW: @nithyavraman’s campaign has filed ethics complaints accusing a @KarenBassLA-backed super PAC of using an AI clone of Raman’s voice to deceive LA voters.
The campaign alleges callers can have live conversations with an AI version of Raman without being told it’s artificial intelligence or who’s funding the operation.

The story behind Measure TE: not the ULA reform advocates wanted, but what we got.
YIMBYs are all in on Nithya for mayor. The developer community is decidedly more mixed.
We break it down in our latest episode.
Can Nithya win over developers?
Housing advocate and developer Andrew Slocum joins the latest episode of "In Search of a City: The LA Housing Podcast" to discuss with hosts @JesseZwick @Leslie_Ridings @_jonnyshotit_ and Io Sunwoo!

LA has spent four years asking: Where is our mayor?
When I’m mayor, you won’t have to ask.
LA deserves a city that shows up for us. A Los Angeles that loves us back. Let’s go get it.

Padilla is the one you might remember from her bragging to @jonlovett about getting an affordable housing project reduced from 6 stories to 3
“It’s been said that she doesn’t have many friends at City Hall, and I know what that feels like,” Horvath told The Times. “When you take on institutional inertia and decades of refusal to change, that kind of shake-up can feel disruptive to people.”

nithya raman's colleagues on the city council don't like her because she has correctly counseled them to not oppose housing developments that will win in court anyway

Politico: Nithya Raman is facing “a full-on, multiple-person verbal assault” from her City Council colleagues, not one of whom has endorsed her.
If Raman wins, her ambitious agenda may depend on her ability to persuade a council majority to go along.

NEW: Chevron just gave $50,000 to support LA Mayor Karen Bass — and defeat Nithya Raman.
"They view Karen Bass as someone who they can work with, someone who will protect their interests in L.A. And they view Nithya Raman as a threat to fossil fuels." climatecoloredgoggles.com/p/…
Insane system we got here
Beethoven Market, a great restaurant at a corner in a residential area had its alcohol license revoked in 2025 due to complaints.
Now, after proposing a sound wall, getting Neigh. Council+100s of support letters, city approved license.
But someone just paid 220$ to appeal it 🙃

I had a great time riffing with @jessezwick on the Housing Action Coalition's new podcast about #LA, playing off of the almost-30th-anniversary of the publication of The Reluctant Metropolis. #cities #mayors

Bill’s book taught me so much about LA when I was first getting into local politics. Was honored to have him on the pod to talk about the mayor’s race, the growth wars of the 80s and 90s, and whether LA can turn the growth machine back on again.
30 years ago, the "The Reluctant Metropolis" was released.
We spoke with author Bill Fulton (@BillFultonVta) on the LA Mayor's Race, housing, and more on our latest episode of "In Search of a City: The LA Housing Podcast"!

SF proposes double-staircase reform!
I’ve been working on single stair reform for years. @HACdotorg sponsored a bill in Sacramento this year and we’re honoring leaders from Culver City on Single Stair reform.
Any framing that this is single stair reform in SF is factually inaccurate. @SFjkdineen @DanielLurie
